just got back from the usac silver crown pavement show at l o r, the former I r p, a racy 7/10 mi. asphalt track near indy. everyone seemed to have the silver crown asphalt division all but dead not long ago, but I was quite pleased to see 26 of the big beauties gracing the pits upon my arrival. I was also amazed at seeing 2 of sprint cars greatest drivers there in their civies, enjoying a night of just kicking back and enjoying being a fan. I guess I wasn't overly surprised to see the Indiana native, the peoples champ, dave darland there in his jeans and tee shirt (a driver who is one win away from tying the legendary tom bigalo for the most usac wins (there's a good chance he'll accomplish the feat during the kokomo smackdown next month, a 3 nights in a row affair). I was more than just a bit shocked to see s. Dakota native, doug wolfgang (one of the alltime greats) there though. he looked fit and trim as did mr. darland. darland announced that he already has a dirt ride in the usac champcar div.set up for next year and is working on an asphalt deal too, so he can run for the solver crown championship next season. and yes there was a race, a 100 lapper and man oh man what a barn burner it was. tanner swanson led 99 and 3/4 laps with david byrne ducking under him coming out of turn 4 on the last lap to steal the win at the finish line, with cody swanson a close 3rd. all in all a great night of RACING, TO HONOR ANOTHER ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS, THE LATE RICH VOGLER, WHOSE MOTHER AND SISTER WERE PRESENT TO PASS ALONG COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS TO 4 WORTHY YOUNG MEN in rich's memory. well it certainly looks as though the silver crown. asphalt division has risen from the ashes. no mention was made regarding the usac sprint car asphalt division which was pronounced doa last year/ or of the usac midget asphalt division, which was originally scheduled to run tonite but was canceled for a lack of cars. it looks pretty dim for each of them, but hey, it looked pretty bleak for the asphalt silver crowns too not long ago, so who knows! oh, and this was my 1st visit to l o r and wow what an awesome facility and a nice crowd tonite too!
