Three Changes NASCAR Needs To Make In 2012
NASCAR will crown its 2011 Sprint Cup Series champion later this week in Las Vegas, when Tony Stewart accepts the accolades for his third series title. The 2011 season was one of the best in NASCAR history, with five first-time winners, 19 overall victors and a much-needed resurgence in both at-track attendance and television viewership. There’s not much that needs fixing in NASCAR these days, but on three specific counts, the sanctioning body can -- and should -– do better.

Job One on NASCAR’s off-season "To-Do List" is to end the annual outbreak of owner point chicanery. NASCAR’s Top-35 system was instituted with noble intent. In an effort to reward teams for supporting the full-36-race championship schedule, NASCAR offers guaranteed starting spots in the first five races of each season to the Top 35 teams in the previous year’s owner points. Unfortunately, the system has been horribly manipulated over the years, until now, it frequently rewards teams that did not even exist the previous season.

It’s time to end the monkey business.

NASCAR should institute a new, “Use It Or Lose It” owner points system for the 2012 Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series campaigns. Under this new system, only the Top-35 in this year’s owner points (Top-30 in Nationwide and Trucks) will be allowed to claim a guaranteed starting spot in their respective season-openers at Daytona International Speedway. No more five-week guarantee, no more bogus ownership transfers, no more selling of owner points to the highest bidder.

And best of all, no more asking, “How did HE make it into the Daytona 500?”

If only 33 of the Top-35 teams return next season, so be it. Thirty three teams will be locked into the 2012 Daytona 500, with two additional spots made available to teams attempting to qualify on speed.

Once the 2012 Daytona 500 is in the books, NASCAR will be free to make much-needed changes to the qualifying system for the remaining 35 races. Since only seven cars actually qualify for a race these days, there’s no drama, no excitement and no reason for anyone to care. “Qualifying Day” has become “Arranging Day,” with nothing at stake other than the starting order for Sunday’s race.

NASCAR can do better.

Next season, old-style qualifying should be scrapped in favor of a new “Happy Hour” qualifying format. Teams will take to the track en masse -– just like they do on race day -– for a 60-minute, free form session that awards the pole position to the driver who turns the fastest lap. It’s simple, it’s exciting and it gives fans a reason to turn out on Qualifying Day for the first time in years.

Finally, NASCAR needs to eliminate the controversial practice of assessing “secret fines” to drivers and teams. Anything worth doing is worth doing in the light of day, and NASCAR demeans itself by operating behind a false cloak of secrecy. It is virtually impossible to keep secrets in the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck garages these days, and by attempting to do so, NASCAR gives the impression that it is somehow ashamed of its actions.

If NASCAR truly wants to be accepted as a major professional sport alongside football, baseball, basketball and hockey, it needs to act professional. “Double-secret probation” has a decidedly Bush League feel to it, and should be done away with, once and for all.

WOW!

I agree with 100% of that!!

But I would take it a step further and not guarantee any driver or car a starting spot in any race. If Joonyer or Jimmie-Chad spins out or crashes in qualifying they can take the first starting spot available among full-time teams - and be put in line ahead of any Start-n-Parkers.

I agree with secret fines, but 50+ car qualifying just wont work.

Secret fines should go, and NASCAR should be VERY specific about why a fine was levied.

Top 35 party favors should be tossed out. Teams should qualify their way in for EVERY race on the schedule, including the bud shootout. The only exception could be the allstar race, where half the field could be set by fan vote.

The free for all qualifing session would be a disaster . It's just fine the way it is and equal for everyone. I can't begin to tell you the crap that would happen on this forum when somebody 's favorite driver got blocked on his pole run.

It's Not equal like he said only about 7 cars qualify

They should scrap the top 35 altogether. Go fast or go home. Maybe they should guarantee the top 12 a spot, but that's it. It's made the Daytona Duels even more confusing than before -- and the author's right, all they're doing is arranging the starting order.

It's Not equal like he said only about 7 cars qualify

No ..only about 7 cars "have to qualify"...but all the cars have an EQUAL shot at the pole . What he proposes is a melee ...,kind of a no holds barred free for all .. Wreckers or checkers deal.

Am I the only person who thinks the multiple car qualifying is lame? I prefer one car at a time just like it used to be. I also think it should be a random draw instead of slowest to fastest.

Completely agree, especially the random draw for qualifying.

Don't y'all think a timed qualifying session, where each driver has multiple opportunities to set their fastest lap, makes sense? Qualifying in NASCAR is the most boringest bunch of bullpucky...

But I also think that for single-car qualifying, a random draw would be a good idea - for the Top 35 anyway. Let the qualify or go home guys all do their thing before or after the Top 35. This "Practice Speed determines qualifying order" stuff needs to go bye-bye!

I agree with the first statement with the exception of qualifying. While I agree that on the larger tracks that there should be more than one car qualifying at a time, it would be hard to do that with a Bristol or Martinsville. Talladega, Daytona and the road courses could get 15 to 20 at a time spaced out properly and the cookie cutter 1.5 miles probably 5 to 10 at a time, but that would be it. I wholeheartedly agree that the top 35 should only go to the actual teams and not up for transfer or sale. I think that secret fines are stupid, too. If NASCAR thinks its okay to fine somebody for complaining, it should broadcast it just like the person that did it.

IMO that is bs also

They won't have enough cars to start a race with.If Vickers is out there with them and they do it that way.

I think the current champ is the only one that should be guaranteed a starting spot. Also would like to see them do away with the past champ provision.

Maybe they should just guarantee the top 35 sponsors a spot in the show.To heck with who the driver is.

I actualy enjoyed the provisions better than this top 35 crap. I think the best way to do qualifying is the fastest 43 race no matter what. I would even support it if they let the driver abort there qualifying run once if they are not up to speed.

I think let them all make their single runs, then any cars qualified outside the top 35 can take an optional qualifying race. That way if they crash or have a failure on their solo run, then can get their backup out and run in the qualifier race.

I'm sure that will bring a wealth of sponsors to NASCAR. :sarcasm:

What SOME ppl don't relize is that the TOP teams would ALWAYS qualify

Go back 10 or 20 years and tell me when a TOP TEAM DID NOT QUALIFY

And I have no problem with bringing out the back up car if they wreck primary. But you still have to get in done in 2 laps.

Me I,ve always thought single car qualifying is boring no matter what track, I'd like to see them go to something similar to what F1 has. This is my take on something similar:

1 Hour qualifying session, Yellows flags count to time limit Reds flags do not.

Segment 1: For the first 20 minutes all cars together on the track try to set the fastest time. Cars from the 31st slowest time go into positions 31-42.

Segment 2: Next 20 minutes the remaining cars do another round, their previous lap times having been cancelled. The slowest 10 cars are eliminated and take the grid positions 13-30.

Segment 3: the remaining 12 cars fight for the pole position, and qualify no lower than 12th.

If a car breaks, wrecks or stops on track neither it nor its driver can take further part in the qualifying session.

Position 43 is reserved for a car that attempted qualiying and failed to make the top 42 for whatever reason priority go's to Previous Champion ( limited to previous 5 Season's ) Driver with most Wins in previous 36 races, Driver highest in current points.

Thats an Hour of excitement NASCAR can sell to TV and sell Tickets for!

FORGET Top 35 qualify in or Go Home.

Why not do heat races like they do at the dirt tracks?

I'd venture to guess that the meaning is that maybe we're just fine with the races that we have.

Well I was talking about using heat races as a way to set up the starting grid for the main event.

It's just qualifing . It always was boring... always will be. They never used to televise it because they figured noone would bother to watch. Now we're trying to make it more exciting then the actual race. It's just qualifing . Don't watch it , it's boring but it serves the purpose .

Oh Come on, Don't you want to jump on The Complain Train with the rest of this crew???
