Hopefully they were not severe and I hope they had a full recovery. How many specators got burned?

It was minor but imagine the lawsuit that would bring today.

It's not the same world today. Back then, stuff just happened. Now days, any time you injure a spectator. you're going to have a big problem, and rightfully so.
