The Big One.

This is a serious question.

I believe NASCAR mandated restrictor plates in 1988. If that is so then there have been two races a year at both Daytona and Talladega for 14 years.........or 28 races per track which is 56 races with restrictor plates. Somewhere along the line "the big one" has become a common occurrence for any plate race. But, I find it hard to believe that there have been 56 "big ones" since 1988........I even find it hard to believe there have been 28 "big ones". I've searched (over two hours) for statistics...........unsuccessfully.:( Does anyone have any stats on just how many "big ones" there have been at these two tracks since the restrictor plates have been put into play? I'm not talking about the wall smacks, two, three, even four car wrecks that happen at almost any track........I mean what everyone fears at Daytona and Talladega (big, car flipping, 10, 12, 18 car pile ups).

I don't believe they happen near as much as it is hyped up to happen. Wish Hardscrabble would come back.:(

I don't know the stats but aren't the Busch car restricted also? Maybe even the trucks?

Not sure about Busch..........but I'm pretty sure trucks are not. But I was really talking about the Cup cars since that is the "real" race.

*note the quotes all you sticklers for details*

The reason I brought up Busch was because it seems every plate track they take out more than hafe the field. I know it happens alot in WC but we have had a few caution free plate races in the recent years.

Hardscrabble...HURRY BACK!!

It does seem that way mustang......but when I think about it, I remember a lot of races at those tracks that are fairly wreck free......just nothing to back it up.!

Anyway........maybe someone has some stats it help figure it out. I'm just afraid someone will turn this into another big "I hate restrictor plates" thing again.:(

Will pick it up again tomorrow...........goodnight buddy.:)

I been watching racing for a LONG TIME. These big pack of cars did not start until the last few years. 1997 maybe? I've watched the 89, 91, 93, 94 Daytona 500's on speed and back then you did not have the big pack of cars. They were pretty spread out. So I'd say the big one has evolved over the last 6 years or so.

I don't think the Busch cars are restricted. They usually have faster times than the Winston Cup guys, at least for qualifying....

Doesn't really make sence if you ask me.

I think the huge pack thing started when they changed the aero rules. Which would be around 96 or 97, that created the huge 3 wide 12 row deep traffic jams, cars not being able to pass because of the lack of HP. Before that i do remember a few big wrecks , but they seem to be more frequent the last 4-5 years past.

The Busch cars are restricted too. They're lighter, that's why they're faster. The Trucks aren't restricted.

I agree with N2racin88 and Mopardh9.The recent aero rules change played havoc as far as bunching-up the pack goes.More so than the plates themselves ever did.

And I have no idea how many 'big-ones' have occured since the plates were implemented either. And as far as that goes, when was the term[big one]even started? It seems like it has been fairly recently?Wrangler?

i do remember a few races having around 2 or 3 big ones in one too

I would say the term got coined about when FOX/FX and NBC/TNT took over the telecasts........as least that's when I started noticing everyone talking about "the Big One" and it's inevitability at the two tracks. I just finished watching the 1997 Daytona 500 on Speed Channel. There were 8 cautions.......two of which envolved over 10 cars. The term was not used at all during the telecast.:)

OH, Sorry, when I saw the title of the thread, I thought it was about me. Carry on.
