For the past several days, I have been reading all of the posts on numerous sites, and reading press releases, etc., regarding the Bristol Night Race incident with Tony Stewart. And, like they say, opinions are like assholes...everybody's got one, so, here is mine.
I am a fan of Tony Stewart. I have supported him since his debut in WC in 1999. Throughout thick and thin I have defended him, through all of his trials and tribulations. The victories, the fines, and all. When I first heard of the incidient, my heart sank. I thought "Oh no, not again. Well this is it. He has really done it this time. He's outta here." And then I sit and think, let's weigh all the evidence. Of course, I do not want to beleive he is guilty. But if he is, the so be it, and that will be that. In the past, with all of the trouble that he has been in and caused, Tony has admitted everything. He has apologized publicly for everything, paid his fines, made restitutions to those who were deserving. He has swallowed his pride and bit the big one. Every time. All of a sudden this time, he is denying it. Maybe it is to save his job, and maybe he is telling the truth. We all remember the story of the boy who cried wolf. Could this be a twisted, reversed version of that story? Think about it. Maybe just this once, he IS innocent. I cannot say. I was not there. I think that we, as race fans, should sit back and assess the situation. These drivers have no privacy. They have no lives that are not scrutinized on a daily basis. And believe it or not: Here I go defending Jeff Gordon. Jeff has even had to defend his sexuality for God's sake. I myself had made more than one bad joke about that. He is getting a divorce, and has been raked over the coals for it. Let's face it people, these race car drivers are not God. What the hell do they owe us, other than to entertain us on the race track from week to week. Who the hell are we to judge any of them? Sure, they are in the spotlight, and so called role models. But wouldn't you rather your child's role model be a police officer, or a soldier defending this fine country which we all call home? This is just a sport. Let's treat it as such and let these people alone. As I said before, I hope that Tony is not capable of shoving a woman. I want to belive the best about him, because he is a great race car driver, and makes my heart race with excitement. But hero, no. He is human. Humans make mistakes. I also think that he is a marked man, and no matter what he says or does, the media or someone will be there lurking, waiting to pounce. This is not fair, in my opinion. Although I have been to many races, I have not had the privilege to be in the garage area or the pits. But I would have enough respect for these people to stay the hell out of their way when they are trying to do their jobs. I work in a hospital, and my job is very important to patient care. I will not hesitate in the least to "move" someone out of my way if I need to. Maybe the next time, this unidentified woman will think twice before she steps in front of a door that someone is trying to get through.
Thanks for letting me vent. I feel better now. I only hope we don't lose our Smoke to the politically correct hell hole that this world is becoming.
