MOORESVILLE, N.C. - Sources close to Dale Earnhardt, Inc., told NASCAR.com Tuesday that executive vice president Ty Norris has resigned from the team, effective immediately.

An announcement from the team is expected Wednesday.

Sources said Norris' decision was made in reaction to Teresa Earnhardt's decision to restructure the team's upper management, thus sending Norris to a lesser role.

Norris, an employee at DEI since 1996, bore the brunt of the company's executive responsibility following Dale Earnhardt's death in February 2001.

Interesting. Especially since Norris was Jr's spotter, too. I guess we'll find out more today, huh?

I'm surprised at this but I think it is a good thing. I think Ty Norris is one of the problems at DEI. I don't know what makes me say that, thats just the way I feel.

Very surprised, but understandable if Teresa pretty much demoted him. Will be interesting to read the announcement today.

It's about time Teresa Earnhardt pull her foot down!
I 'm not surprised one bet!

Maybe all is not well at DEI. Either that or Teresa didn't like the way things were going. Could this be a step to one day having a bigger management role for Jr. ?

well, I never understood how you take a reporter and in a few years make him Ex. VP of a multi-billion dollar company.

Still no official word from DEI, but there's this:

Norris moves out, Gilmore moves up
in changes at Dale Earnhardt Inc.

Ty Norris confirmed Wednesday that he resigned as executive vice president of motorsports at Dale Earnhardt Inc. on Monday and is going to "take some time" before pursuing other job offers.
Norris, reached by phone Wednesday afternoon, would not comment on why he left the organization after eight years, but said it should be "self-explanatory" once DEI issues a press release regarding his departure.

As of late Wednesday, DEI had yet to release any statement regarding Norris.

"You don't do something for eight years and put your heart and soul in it without taking a little bit of time before looking around to see what other options might be available," Norris said.

"I have some other offers to consider and at some point I will decide to move into something else and I will put my heart and soul into that as well."

Norris also served as spotter for DEI driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. and that position will have to be filled soon as the 2004 season gets under way with the Feb. 7 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona Beach, Fla.

As for the job Norris held at DEI, sources said Wednesday that Richie Gilmore, who has worked most recently as DEI's head engine builder, will take a front-office role in the company that will encompass much of what Norris did.

Gilmore's new role is part of a restructuring of DEI's upper management, sources said, ironed out over the past weekend.

Norris, who began his career as a sportswriter in Delaware, became friends with Dale Earnhardt and in 1996 joined the late driver's then-new company. When Earnhardt was killed in a last-lap wreck at Daytona in February 2001, Earnhardt's widow, Teresa, became team owner and Norris began to oversee the day-to-day running of the organization.

Initially, DEI's headquarters was a small, brick house on the edge of Earnhardt's farm in Kannapolis, N.C., and employed about 15 people

Today, the 220,000-square-foot headquarters still sits on the farm, but includes facilities for three Nextel Cup teams, a Busch team, shop, showroom and store and employs more than 200 people.

Question now is, is DEI better off or worse under Teresa Earnhardt's reign of terror?

Someone told me recently about how on the radio during a race last year, Jr. referred to Norris as Teresa's bitch.

Norris was a friend of DE. Maybe the bosslady doesn't share that close a friendship with him.

Oh well, time to move on. DEI has gone through some changes and I'm sure that will continue.

Ty Norris and DEI deny rumors of blow-up.

Ty Norris, who resigned Monday as executive vice president of motorsports at Dale Earnhardt Inc., on Thursday denied his departure was the result of a "blow-up" or confrontation with owner Teresa Earnhardt.
"There have been many reports of a 'blow-up' between myself and Teresa. Those are absolutely false," Norris said.

"We parted on the best of terms. We have been great friends for 15 years and I hope to remain friends with the Earnhardts until the day I die."

Norris would not address specific questions regarding his departure, saying further comment was "unnecessary."

Thursday, DEI formally named former head engine builder Richie Gilmore to lead its motorsports functions, replacing Norris.

DEI's news release did not address the question of why Norris left the company.

Reached later, DEI spokesman Steve Crisp reiterated there had been no confrontation or 'blow-up' between Teresa Earnhardt and Norris.

personally, i think she may hurt DEI!! just never have gotten into her that much. lol
