The Buzz: Childress, Jack Daniel's to partner?
December 1, 2004
The final piece of Richard Childress Racing's 2005 NASCAR racing puzzle is scheduled to fall into place Friday, when representatives of RCR and Brown-Forman Beverages have scheduled a news conference in New York City.
By the end of the 2004 Nextel Cup Series season, driver Dave Blaney and Jack Daniel's -- a Brown-Forman brand along with Southern Comfort, Early Times and Canadian Mist -- were rumored to be teaming up in Childress' third Cup team.
Childress already has tied up other loose ends in his operation, including moving Jeff Burton from the No. 30 America Online Chevrolet to the No. 31 Cingular Chevy, and naming Clint Bowyer to drive his No. 2 ACDelco Chevy in the Busch Series.
The new program is expected to involve the No. 30 operation.
The entry of distilled spirits sponsorship was cleared last month when NASCAR announced it had rescinded its previous ban on hard liquor sponsors. Diageo, which includes Crown Royal among its family of brands, immediately, announced the spirit would appear on Nextel Cup champion Kurt Busch's No. 97 Ford in selected races in 2005.
At the same time, Jack Daniel's was rumored to be ready to announce its deal with RCR.
