I know 99% of you couldn't possibly care less about the NBA, much less the Cleveland Cavaliers, but they have me mildly excited for a change. I'm not expecting them to go on a championship run shortly or anything, but before this week they were 2-15 on the road this season. They traded for Luol Deng and went 3-2 on a west coast road trip. Even as a public school kid, I know that math is pretty impressive, even if it is a very small sample size. Deng isn't the best small forward in the league, but he is pretty damn good and their small forward situation before he arrived had to be the worst of any team in the league. Mike Brown spent most of the season switching back and forth between starting Earl Clark and Alonzo Gee at the small forward spot. Each of them average about 4 points a game. Do you have any idea how pathetic it is to see that on the screen at the start of a game? Just having someone on the floor that the other team actually has to guard has made a huge difference for the other players out there. He also provides maturity and leadership on a team that was severely lacking in both areas.
I'm actually feeling good about the chances of not being in the NBA lottery this year. I know that this draft class is supposed to be really good, and getting a 7 or 8 seed in the East means that you likely get swept in the first round by Indiana or Miami. But, I think just getting to experience the playoffs for even a few games would be great for young guys Dion Waiters, Kyrie Irving, and Tristan Thompson. In the NBA, you gotta walk before you run. Nobody ever just shows up in the playoffs and starts winning championships. Even Michael Jordan and the Bulls had to lose a few playoff series to toughen and season them enough to win big.
