Kinda cool.

What do you think. Is this a good thing?

NBC is in the development stage for a scripted drama centered around a NASCAR family. Here is a blurb from the deadline.com media website:

NBC is developing The Crew, a testosterone-heavy underdog family drama set in the world of NASCAR from Heroes writer-producer Joe Pokaski and NBC Universal-based producer Scott Stuber. The ensemble revolves around the family of distinctly different "brothers" on a NASCAR racing team who, as individuals have their own lives and dreams, opportunities and problems but as a team share a singular goal - to be the best.

What sets The Crew apart is that it is expected to be done in cooperation with NASCAR. NBC is in negotiations with the racing league for the rights to use its name, logos, tracks, race footage, etc. Stuber already has a similar arrangement with NASCAR on the feature side at Universal Pictures where he is producing a NASCAR drama with Gary Ross attached to direct.

I sure don't see it as a bad thing for NASCAR. Maybe the viewers of the new show, should it be done, may become new NASCAR fans. You may not watch but others will. Probably most existing fans of NASCAR will complain because this isn't realistic or something else along those lines but I do find it interesting that it may be done with the potential backing of NASCAR. I wonder if somehow they'll work in actual people from the sport from time to time?

A show like Desperate Housewifes starring Na$car mechanics,,,hmmm

"Does this MAC toolbox make my rachet look fat"?

:)

It's not going to work.

How long did some of those football dramas or even comedies last? And how large was the viewing audience?

The critics that dislike the sport will make the usual comments about Nascar fans and the sport in general.

Nascar had tried to go "hollywood" in the last 10 to 15 years and that is just one of the many reasons it has lost its longtime fans.
This might appeal to the young and short attention span crowd but they will tire of it and move on resulting in another network flop.

I doubt that I will be wasting my time watching this.

This sounds dumber then those NASCAR romance novels.

If it was anyone else but NBC. Remember that NBC was trying to throw NASCAR fans under the bus by making us all out to be racists on Dateline. With that in mind, I don't see how this could be any good whatsoever.

Must have Brian France's blessing if they are going to pursue it.

Heck, maybe it was even his idea. :D

Sure not a lot of NASCAR love on this board. I thought some may see the promotion of the sport as a good thing.

Promotion, yes. Soap Operatic TV shows, however, DO NOT equal promotion. Promote you product, your drivers, your races, your action. Don't make up fictional characters and think that's the same thing.

If NASCAR is wanting to change their entire demographic to 13-25 year old females then it's perfect.

Gay idea. Next.

Just a thought here...with the somewhat success of History Channel's "Madhouse", I wonder if NBC saw this as an influence? I would think that if they wanted this to be successful, they would have to have not only good guys, but bad guys as well.

Another thought...if you watched the show "The Unit", you saw two different story lines. One was about the unit and their missions and the other was about their families, i.e. wives in this case. It was hard to get used to at the beginning, but after I watched it a few times, I kind of liked the idea. This might work also...but then again...
