The 'Double' May Be Impossible in the Future

Today could be the last time any driver competes in both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 in the same day if the Indy 500's starting time is changed. ABC, Indy Racing League and speedway officials are considering moving the starting time of the Indy 500 back, beginning next year. Tradition dictates that the race start at noon, but that's 9:00am on the West Coast and makes it hard to attract a larger audience. Pushing the Indianapolis 500's starting time back an hour most likely would prevent any driver from running both races because they wouldn't be able to get to Lowe's Motor Speedway in time for the start of the 600. Since John Andretti first accomplished the feat in 1994, Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon have done it. Gordon is attempting it today for a third consecutive year. Stewart last ran both races in 2001.(Roanoke Times)(5-30-2004)

Personally think it would be a shame. I think they might be loosing some auidence in doing so. I only watch to see the NASCAR guys. If no one's doing double duty, I probably won't watch. I quit watching today once Robby left.

I'm pretty much with TonyB..........though I do sort of keep tabs while waiting for the 600. :)

I kept it on out in my shop while waiting for the 600 to come on, but once the time came I went in and watched Lowe's.

I think it would be a big mistake if they did this, I believe their ratings would drop as a result, not increase.

I sure don't mind getting up by 9 am to watch a race.........heck, I do it all the time with the NASCAR races!! :)

I was up at 4 to watch F1 this morning.... Gotta love it baby... Heck of a race day.

I must say.. Since viewing of the 500 has decreased so much in recent years, I think it will detract from the audience base if they switch the times. I for one wouldn't watch the 500 if there were no doubles involved.

I haven't watched an entire open wheel race in many years. I do check in on the Indy 500 just to check out the Cup guys more or less. Even then I can't really get into the sport much. I liked it when I was a kid, but now if they aren't swapping a little paint every now and then it just doesn't interest me too much.

I do too WOP :D

If it's racing I want to see it even if I do have to get up a little early. Of course I'm usually up by 4:30-5am anyway.

Hey WOP, do you post over at SPEED?? If not there's a guy over there copying your style. LOL
