We got four more races to go. Until I GET EXCITED :bounce:

I'm starting to get revved up again. The summer season is kinda boring. But the points situation is getting to the POINT.... HA!

Good luck to those who need it, they will need all they can get when it comes to trying to beat Jimmie Johnson come Homestead.

After seeing what Tony did last year, I think Chad has had a plan all year to run just good enough and get a few wins for bonus points and then poor it on in the chase.

Just good enough? Explain to me again why they wouldn't want to win all of the races.

Maybe he was "points racin" , not trying to get the maximum points by leading the most laps and winning . But racing just to get enough points to make the chase . Then he fools everybody else into not trying so hard in the chase . And he cruises to the win .

I got it now. Thanks for the explanation. Rather than run as good as you can the whole season and collect all of the money/points/accolades, the strategy is to hold back and sneak up on them while they don't see you coming. Excellent! ;)

Call me a naive but I don't think any of these top teams are going out there just to turn laps. Some may be trying things in order to gain an advantage when it comes Chase time but they are still trying to cross that finish line first each week.

Seems to me that trying things that may make you faster in a chase race , may also make you faster in the race that you are trying it in . Isn't that what teams always do ,in every race.?

Perhaps that's what Racer8 means. Chad and JJ have said for years they use the first half of the regular season to try things out to make them faster. If it doesn't work, it really doesn't affect their championship chances.

Thats basically it. I think they will settle for a 5th place finish and stay in the top 10 than go for the win and take a risk.
Points racing I guess. Either that or they are just not as good as they used to be, which I find hard to believe.

This is what I think also but I also know that JJ & Chad would rather wrestle naked with sumo wrestlers in a fire ant pit than take a chance of not being first across the finish line just like all "real" racers.

Probably right, Johali. But I can see Chadski and JJ taking the "big picture" approach - especially if they are racing at a track that will be in the chase or one that drives like a chase track. They obviously know what it takes to win races and crowns...

I have to agree with all of you guys . Chad and Jimmy do / do not try to win every race. Thankfully we have come to an agreement . Peace and Love .
Hooray Ted! Hooray beer!
Sounds more like a group hug coming?
I'm up for that .

Perhaps a few drinks a nice dinner and then yall can see where it goes from there?

I think they aren't the only team that does that, I'd put Stewart and maybe Biffle and Kennseth in there too on that strategy. Chad and JJ are just better at it than everybody else.;)

My question is ... Don't all teams 'try things that will make them faster ' , all of the time ? And ,if they don't , why not ?

I didn't realize until I started reading this thread that so many of the top teams simply ride around testing things in order to get ready for the Chase. Here I thought they were out there trying their damnedest to win. What the heck was I thinking?

I'm sure some teams that are locked in try some stuff they normally wouldn't try just to see how it works, but I don't think any of them approach a race as a test session for the Chase. You don't get the bonus points the last 10 races so they should be trying to collect as many bonus points as possible beforehand.

As I said before, JJ & Chad would rather wrestle naked with sumo wrestlers in a fire ant pit than not have a chance of winning a race just like all "REAL" racers. Try different stuff, yes, jeopardize a win, not a chance.

Are you 2 doing a comedy routine? ;)

Seriously guys, 20 or 30 drivers have stood in front of the camera and said they were experimenting with something new, the regular season is the time to test new things, etc. Sometimes, it doesn't work out. Teams take bigger risks testing new setups etc in the regular season. What works goes in their cars. What doesn't gets tossed. Would it make sense to wait and do this during the chase? Or not try to improve? To say they aren't trying to win races when they go way out there trying something new isn't accurate at all.

RISK (be less competitive in regular season race) VS REWARD (be faster during the chase).

I think this last race is proof that there are only 2 or 3 teams each week that try to win.The rest just ride around.

As always Fender , you have the give of being able to make sense of this stuff and explain it in a simple way that I can understand . Thank you for not using the sumo mud wrestling analagy . I was lost ...not being Japanese .

Huh? Are you daft, little Chevy Jesus? ;) You get to keep a LARGER point bonus for wins in the chase. A regular season win gets you 3 points for the chase. A chase win gets you a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 6, because you get to keep the 1 position point for first place, and 1 lap led bonus AND possibly most laps led. A win in the chase is worth far more toward the championship than a regular season win, and teams know that. A finish out of the top 10 in the chase due to testing new stuff hurts too much to risk. Teams know that too.

You're welcome, my diaper challenged friend. ;)

Are you officially a fenderette now? :D

Maybe a little "daft" this morning:(
I was referring to the points that seed the Chase drivers 1-10. I love NASCAR so much I sometimes talk in circles:)

Drivers love those 3 bonus points, because there is 26 chances to get them. I think if you told any driver he would be guaranteed a chase spot and 5 wins this year, and asked when he wants the wins, every driver would pick 5 races in the chase. Except Logano. He would ask his Daddy what to do.

Damn nitpicker, picking all kinds of nits today. :D

Not all of them try new things and different approach's every time they hit the track. You can tell the ones that dont by looking in the Bottom of the Points Standings.

......Are you officially a fenderette now? :D

I would like to humbly accept this honor , and in doing so , pay a tribute to all of those people that I had to step on while making my way to the top. I hope that I don't have to see them again on my way back down.

Just ask Stewart, he played it sly during the season then what happened in the Chase? Prime example of why the Chase sucks!

It sucks that a guy gets a huge point deficit wiped out in an instant. Other than that, it was fun to watch.....oh, and Carl didn't win.
