The future schedule of the Nextel Cup Series

The 2005 schedule made some major changes to the schedule with Rockingham and Darlington losing a race and Texas and Phoneix getting those races. With Nascar talking about tracks in New York City and in the North West, what tracks do you think are going to be next to lose a race date so these tracks will get one.

When the New York City track is built I think Pocono will probably lose a date. With Nascar wanting to go over the boarder, Watkins Glen will probably lose its date to a road course in Canada or Mexico when the new track in the city gets its date. With there talk of Chcagoland getting a second date in the near future, ISC will probably move a date from there newest track Martinsville over.

Probably Dover or Louden since they still race there twice.

People, learn from your history or be doomed to repeat it!

Darlington is on Death Row. When another date gets appropriated, it'll be the death of not only the best track, but the most historic track on the circuit. Then they will have won the final victory.

Hope y'all enjoy the '05 season.

When Richard Petty won his championships, didn't they do 50 some races a year? I think they should do alot more races than they do now. Nothing says they can't do some races during the week.

Nothing...except the tremendous cost. Think tickets are too high now?

Nothing...except attendance figures. Check out the attendance at your favorite baseball stadium on a weekend, a week night, and a weekday day game.

Not the solution.

Vegas, Chicagoland, and maybe Kansas will get another date in the next few years. I wouldn't be surprised if PPIR in Fountain, Colorado got a Cup date in 2006 or 2007. I think Darlington is hanging on by a thread unless serious upgrades are made to the facilities, garage area, and track itself in the very near future. I wouldn't be surprised to see Dover , NH, and Pocono all lose 1 date.

I don't see Darlington losing its one race date. They have put some big improvements in to the track with the soft walls as well as installing lights around the track. Plus the one race Darlington has is a night race which is very popular with the fans and will hopefully fill the stands.

Also if Dover would lose a race date it would only go to another track owned by Dover Motorsports (because of the Realingment 2004 and beyond) so it would either go to St. Louis or Nashville.

I wouldn't mind seeing Pocono go, I really don't like the track. But to see places like Darlington and Dover lose races, that isn't right.

I actually like Pocono, don't lnow why so many people hate it. BUT Loudon sucks.... it should have lost both of its dates already.

Chicagoland doesn't deserve another date.....the stands were NOT as full as Darlington!
IF NA$CAR does approve a track in STATEN ISLAND who is gonna go? Ferry to the island, no parking, no campgrounds, etc.
Someplace in Joisey or Long Island would make more sense. AND MAKE IT LIKE BRISTOL!!!
Please lose one in Louden! I Like Pocono!
NO MORE COOKIE CUTTER TRACKS PLEASE!!!!!!!

(kat edited for cussin)

I know Chicagoland wasn't full to capacity, but that market area doesn't have too many races. All there is is 2 in Michigan, 1 in Chicago and 1 in Indy. It would make sense to add another date in Chicago and take one away from either Dover or NH. I like Pocono, but i think it is a horrible place to watch a race. It is great on TV, but if you have ever been there to watch a live race you know what i mean. Most likely Pocono will lose a date to Vegas, which will get a fall race to run in conjunction with the Trucks.

pocono will lose a date when they build the new track in nyc...hopefully it doesn't lose both dates, and i'd like to see it keep both dates since i believe challenging the drivers and teams should come before fan amenities and attendance and ratings, but exchanging one pocono race for a short track a hundred miles away would be more palatable than closing rockingham and sending the labor day race all the way across the country.

(sidenote...i didn't respond to this when i saw it the first time, but did anybody else roll their eyes when they saw the isc spokesperson, talking about the "promising future" of martinsville, mention that traditional race dates are important to them?)

All tracks wether ISC or SMI or independent should have 1 race each.

I agree on both accounts.
Pocono has 3 different degree banked turns, called a roval at times as it's known as the superspeedway that drives like a road course,is very taxing on engines/trannies/drivetrains and drivers,LOL.It's one of a kind is one of the major reasons that I like it,would like to see it keep both dates, but should at last keep one of those dates.
Yeap,Darlington still has one spring night race in 2005,but hey the Soutjern 500 is gone after this year,so why bother keeping the old lady in black around at all,I guess to use Their new lighting system,I bet it'll be gone within 5 years,JMHO. :p

More road courses and short tracks are needed, get back to the real racing and real driver's tracks,to heck with plate tracks and cookie-cutter crap IMHO

each type of track should represent a certain percentage of the overall season, imo...

8 short track races
8 1-1.4 mile track races
8 1.4-1.8 mile track races
8 1.8-up mile track races
4 road course races

if there are 8 tracks that fall under one catagory, each of those tracks gets one race. if there are 4 tracks that fall under one catagory, each one gets two races. each road course would get two races, unless they decided to race at new-to-nascar road course venues.

and, for the time being, if one catagory has less than four tracks, then each of them gets 2 races, and the closest track(s) to that catagory get moved to that catagory. (example, until more short tracks are built, dover or rockingham could occupy a "short track" spot.)...but, of course, one eye would have to be kept open to guard against "over-saturation" in any one region (ex: limit to 'x amount' of races within 'x distance' of charlotte...not for me, i like the historical tracks, but for "nascare's growth.")

Never really cared much about Pocono. But I don't want to see then lose both dates one maybe. Don't really think Nashville will get a date. ( All though I would love it only 150 mi away.) Nascar wants to get away fron the Southern base and go west or north.

While I will agree that it would be a shame for Darlington to lose its only date we do have to deal in realities. And, Kat your statement is probably more from the heart than the actual facts.

Chicagoland doesn't deserve another date.....the stands were NOT as full as Darlington!

The fact is Chicago seats 75,000 spectators and has 37 luxury suites. They have sold out for three consecutive years and are now working on selling out 2005. Now, whether or not these folks actually use their tickets I don't know but they do buy them. In contrast Darlington seats only 55,381 and unfortunately it has not been full of late.
Some overall numbers that is fueling NASCAR's actions:
Year Ratings Attendance
2000 5.1 6,500,000
1999 5.5 6,527,456
1998 5.7 6,301,027
1997 5.8 6,091,356
1996 5.2 5,588,069
1995 5.1 5,326,721
1994 5.4 4,896,000
1993 5.0 4,020,220
1992 5.5 3,699,833
1991 4.7 3,377,050

I would guess that this plateau is why they are looking at new tracks and tracks that do seat more people and will draw higher ratings. As I said before, it's all about the money.

Martinsville has two races right? Take a Martinsville race off and take a race off of darlington and build your track in new york and add another venue wherever.

There are other answers. Some drivers are looking to ease up on their schedule like Rudd and TLabonte. BillE is driving a reduced schedule. Why not start a Senior's Tour like Golf? They could race the short tracks and not race as many. Have it age restricted. This would keep the smaller tracks going with some of the NASCAR legends that should draw people. You wouldn't have 43 cars but on the short tracks do you need that many. You know Schrader would be there if it didn't interfere with his Cup ride. And, yes let them do both if they wanted. Spencer would be a natural candidate. Pair this race with the Trucks maybe as a double header. Have the races on the opposite coast/time zone as the Busch and Cup races. The purses wouldn't be as big but then the truck purses aren't big either.

And, on a side note, why do the trucks race once in Feb., once in March, a couple of times in April before going to a full time schedule? Wouldn't everyone, drivers, fans, owners, TV networks, benefit more if they were more spread out. Say 3 races a month? Their schedule seems so haphazard now.

it's not as bad as the winston west...i mean grand national west...who start their season in january, only to sit around for a couple months, then make sporadic appearances here and there, before racing a few races within a short span in the summer...

i'm pretty much opposed to a senior tour...let the big names run with smaller series or locally to help draw fans to lower levels. the gn west and north, elite division, asa, and arca all need help with attendance...if the older guys still have the reflexes to be competitive, i'd love to see them continue racing where their names could help themselves as well as the newer guys and the older guys that never went to cup get some extra attention...and if they don't have the reflexes to continue, they shouldn't be putting themselves and other legends at risk by still trying to race competitively.

And if you were the CEO of a corporation, I'm sure you'd shell out the bucks to sponsor one of these "older guys" in their little series. Somebody has to pay the bills, y'all.

Not gonna happen, I'm tellin ya.
