Dega Turtles

#49-Stacy Compton………..42nd in points
#09-Geoffrey Bodine……….43rd in points
#71-Jay Sauter,……………..45th in points
#33-Kenny Wallace……..….50th in points
#89-Morgan Shepherd……..51st in points
#51-Tim Fedawa……………60th in points
#11-Brett Bodine…………...out of provs
#23-Scott Wimmer………...out of provs
#83-Kerry Earnhardt………no provs as it is a brand new entry.

Forty-seven entries with 37 almost guaranteed spots leaving room for 6 turtles. Your guess is as good as mine as to how this is all going to shake out……

Brett Bodine is out of provisionals. He'll have to make the race on speed. He can't afford to be a turtle this week.

Well, Geoff's a fairly safe bet to make it. Compton, if that piece of junk can last 2 laps. Beyond that, no clue. Maybe Brett can sneak in, I love looking at Hooters. :D

Best guess is that both Bodines along with Wimmer, and Wallace will make the field on time. All 4 of these cars qualified easily for the last Dega race. The 71 with an RCR motor might get in on time. Question is, do they have the money to get one? The 83 is a total mystery tho I imagine it's got DEI help and is going to make one heck of a try.

I would not count out Stacy Compton on time. You don't hire a two-time pole winner and then discount how he wants the car so I don't think set-up will be a problem tho I wonder if they've got a motor that can bring the car up to speed.

Seven regulars used provs as they were between 3 and 4 miles an hour off the pace last time out at Dega with one of them posting no time. I'm guessing that more than a few of the turtles will make the race on time and that at least one or maybe even two regulars will be going home, along with Shepherd and Fedawa for sure.

For me (being that I follow life at the back of the pack quite closely) this is about as crazy a starting line-up to figure as I've seen the entire year.

Oh wow....hate to sound like I'm talking to myself here but just noticed the sponsor of the 71 this week at Dega.....Realtree Camouflage. Look for the 71 to qualify well within the top 36.

I see both the Bodines, Wimmer, Kerry, Kenny and the 71 making the fireld.

Jay is under contract to RCR. I would almost expect the 71 to be an RCR proxy-car instead of a Marcis car. Best part is that I might just have something to cheer about this weekend.

Nope, Carl has signed on with another team. Not sure when it enter a race. And btw, I miss counted the entries...only 46 what with McMurray hoping in to Sterling's ride.

It's getting better....or worse....depending on how you view the little guys.....

Latest news at jayski's has the #42 collaboration of Melling/Gannasi becoming the Melling Racing #92 of Robert Presslely so the entry list is back to 47. This is the same car that Stacy Compton drove to both poles last year and also ran 4th in time trials at this years Daytona 500, but sits 55th in owner points so a prov is probably out of the question.

While it's something I have dealt with for a number of years being that I am a 71 fan, consider the possibllity that if your favorite driver is below the top 30 or 35 in owner points, he might just be going home early from Talladega.

The Bodines are very likely in on time. The 92 Pressley is a very strong car. The Earnhardt 83 probably has DEI help so it's going to be strong. Wallace and Wimmer (33 and 23) are both in cars that got in easy for the last Dega race. The 49 has last years two-time pole sitter at the wheel. The 71 Jay Sauter is probably an RCR proxy car so it will probably be strong.

Figuring that if these 7 cars all pull rabbits out of their hats and the 51 and 89 don't get up to speed that leaves two lower in points drivers packing up. If the 51 and 89 somehow catch a bit of cloud cover and become the biggest surprises of the weekend, make it 4 regulars going home.

Still saying that your guess is as good as mine as to who will or will not make the race.

With only 3 missing, it is tough call who won't make it. I would hate to see Brett Bodine miss another race, but when you have 2 cars (the 71 and the 83) both running RCR/DEI engines you know they stand a pretty good chance of making this race.

Read somewhere that the #71 us running both a Childress body and motor, look for decent speeds from this car.

The Melling entry is usually quick enough to make the field as is the BAM car, but maybe not this time. The field of "turtles" may be a little stronger than usual and since the plates tend to even out things in the engine compartment the OOP folks may have a very hard time.

The rain from Hurricane Lili could make a short weekend for the guys with no prov's or points.

Shepherd withdraws the 189 and replaces Tim Fedewa in Rick Ware's 151.

I like looking at the Hooters restaurant near me also. They have the nicest landscaping and flowers out front.;) ;) :D

There is nothing wrong with Hooters. I can almost see it from out my dorm window, boy do I love a college town. :D Of course I only go for the food. :p ;)

Renshaw runs Hooters right below her spoiler. Bodine might be real close to losing them if he doesn't step it up

I really hope Geoffrey Bodine makes the race though. He seems to be really good at Talladega and Daytona.

Addendum to 71Fan's list in the event qualifying is rained out.

36 - Kenny Wallace - #33 car won in 2001 at Rockingham

I hope we can see Hooters in the race again, it's been lonely for two weeks. :p
