The Herd of Turtles at The Rock

Thirty-nine regulars plus:

#02-Hermie Sadler…………..565……44th
#71-Tim Sauter………………487……45th
#74-Tony Raines…………….485……46th
#66-Hideo Fukuyama……….326…….47th
#59-Carl Long…………………258…….49th
#60-Jack Sprague……………96……..53rd
#27-Kirk Shelmerdine………..180……57th
#91-Hank Parker Jr…...………25……75th
#54-Ron Hornaday……………..10……78th
#23-Kenny Wallace………no provs

The 23 didn’t make the spring race on time and no reason to believe it can with a new driver which leaves 4 spots at the back for the turtles. Loading up early will be Kenny, Carl, and Kirk. Ron Hornaday and the Car 54 Where Are You will find themselves once again wasting good tires. The 60 of Jack Sprague has tried 3 times so far and hasn’t made it yet. Pack it Jack.

Down to 44. Hank gets Ray’s other Dodge up to speed and Back Row Joe goes home.

Gazing in to my ever trusty crystal ball The Herd of Turtles starting at the Rock will be:

#02-Hermie Sadler
#71-Tim Sauter
#74-Tony Raines
#91-Hank Parker Jr

Your experience, opinions, and milage may vary

Cars that will make the race:

#02 - Hermie Sadler: Aerodynamics aren't as important at the Rock as other places, and when that's the case, Hermie usually can qualify well. Even if he doesn't, he's first in line for the provisional.

#23 - Kenny Wallace: Has consistently qualifed that car in on speed, and it is likely he will again this week.

#74 - Tony Raines: Has given that team an impressive run. Has made the field for half their races they've attempted and kept it clean on the track every time.

#91 - Parker Jr.: B/c he's probably racing better equipment than the #7 ever had and they made the fields.

Teams I might eat my words on when they make the race:

#71 - Sauter: Car will be slow, but he's got 2nd dibs on a provisional out of the turtles.

#60 - Sprague: They have some strong cars, but can never make the field b/c of rain. They might not have been prepared for this track, but I'm sure he will be one to watch in qualifying.

Here is my pick of cars going home if Quals are not rained out

#71-Tim Sauter………………487……45th
#74-Tony Raines…………….485……46th
#66-Hideo Fukuyama……….326…….47th
#59-Carl Long…………………258…….49th
#27-Kirk Shelmerdine………..180……57th
#23-Kenny Wallace………no provs

Kenny's average qualifying run since he has taken over the car (4 tries) has been 31.75. Call it 32. That's not a lot to work with.

The 91 is there even if ol Ray has to turn the wrenches himself. So it's down to Tim and Tony. Jayski sez it's Jay Sauter in the 71 so the RCR clone-car might surprise everybody.

If Kenny makes it on time, Tim in an MAR 71 would definately be the bubble boy with Tony being the spoiler, but Tim's a short track ace too.

Gonna be a great day at the track come Friday one way or the other.....who sez qualifying is boring?

Rainin On The Rock……

40th back looks like this.

#23-Kenny Wallace…………previous winner
#71-Tim Sauter………………487……45th ……….13 attempts
#74-Tony Raines…………….485……46th ……...11 attempts
#02-Hermie Sadler…………..565……44th…...…10 attempts

Very interesting now that we always have to had rain in. I like Hermie, Tony Raines, Jack Sprague, and Kenny to make the race.

I think that Jack, Hermie and Kenny will make the race, not sure about the others.

weather dot com is calling for partly cloudy in the afternoon Friday, cloudy Saturday, and back to partly Sunday with only a 10 percent chance for Sunday and nothing on the others.

Then good, it looks promising that we will be able to get every event in without any rain this weekend.

No rain:)

Whoopser on the 60......It's tried 3 times and missed twice making the Kansas race solidly with a 23rd starting position.

The crystal ball might be starting to fog up:(

That's ok 71, the season is almost over. The crystal ball might need a break, which it can have until Daytona.

Jack and the #60 team made a strong debut at Kansas practicing (19th) and qualifying very well.

The next two attempts were foiled by rain washing out qualifying. But practice times for the team at both of those events were marginal at best. Somewhere around a 47th and a 39th ranking at Charlotte and Atlanta respectively.

Gonna have to pick up the pace to get in this field.

Interesting note on NOL, I read the McMurray will have to make the race on time and won't be able to fall back on owner points this week. Unless of course, it rains.

Huh? That's weird. Provs are based on owner points and the 40's got plenty of both. Are ya sure they weren't talking Busch?

This I gotta check, but even ol Hardscrabble could put the 40 in on time so even if it's true it might be much ado about nothing.

I may have misread this, but it came from Ryan's article "411" at Rockingham.

This weekend is a true test to see how good Jamie McMurray is. He won't get to sit back on owners points this week.

Bud Pole Qualifying probably won't get rained out -- for the first time since March, it seems -- so McMurray better have a good lap in store for Friday. It's hard enough being a rookie at Rockingham, but when you qualify 35th, a driver will find himself getting lapped within an hour.

Seems to me what Ryan Smithson is saying is that Jamie won't be starting 4th this week because of a rain-out. The 40 car ain't going home.

I do believe that Ryan is saying that Jamie will have to make it on speed to get a "good" starting spot. Definition of "good" seems to to extend much farther back in the field than it used to.

Jamie has qualified three consecutive races at the Rock in BGN, likely four after this week, and has some experience on the track.

On the other hand my experience is very limited at the Rock, but I would say my chances of putting the #40 car in the field would be better than "fair"!;)

Jamie did have to qaulify the car for one race, didn't he? Or has the three races he's been in been rained out? We've been plagued with so much rain, I don't remember.

The #40 isn't going to be going home, that's for sure.

well, kerry wont be there, so we should have good enough weather for qualifying:p

Neither is Geoffrey Bodine or Scott Wimmer. I guess the teams got tired of going to these tracks and having to go home before they ever could put their cars on the tracks.

But as Carl Long proves, if you keep trying, eventually you will get in!

Wouldn't it be funny if the guy nobody guessed, Kirk, got in the race?

I don't think that's going to happen though. He's a good Arca racer, but he doesn't have much to work with in Cup to try and get in the field with even Brett Bodine in the primary car missing a handful of races at the end of this season.

Surprises are the best part of qualifying. I always hope there is some no name who puts forth a great lap, makes the race, and screws up everyone.

Well then, look for Timmy to put the 71 in on time then, for Kenny to not get up to speed, and for Back Row Joe to once again get blamed for somebodies fave not making the race cause he takes the last provisional.:D
