The death toll is approaching 80,000, and will probably surpass the toll from any other natural disaster. Contagious diseases will take thousands more lives, people are scavenging for food, no clean water, animals are also suffering and so much more.
This was a tragedy of the first magnitude for our fellow man.
I received the following today
With the number of dead rising to 80,000, and millions left homeless, the tsunami that hit Southeast Asia on Sunday will continue to claim victims if lifesaving assistance is not brought to the disaster areas quickly. Your urgent help is needed.
Mercy Corps, a partner of The Hunger Site, has mobilized its global emergency team -- including sending humanitarian aid workers who are now working on the scene -- as they engage in a rapid, lifesaving response. Contaminated water and disease are placing survivors at risk, and needs such as edible food and basic shelter are top priorities as the days grow since the disaster.
You can help Mercy Corps deliver lifesaving aid and assistance. A contribution of any size can make a real difference in what many say will be the largest relief effort ever mobilized. Your assistance will aid survivors who are struggling to locate loved ones, while their own lives remain at risk from disease and infection.
Disaster Strikes Communities Without Warning
Without forewarning, waves reaching to 30 feet high and moving at speeds up to 500 mph crashed into beaches, homes and businesses early Sunday morning in areas ranging from Thailand to Somalia. Generated by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake, the largest in 40 years, the tsunami quickly moved inland, striking coastal cities and burying entire communities under raging floodwaters.
Mercy Corps is able to take decisive action for survivors of this disaster after working in many areas of Southeast Asia, including India and Indonesia, for years. A world leader in humanitarian relief, Mercy Corps works with local organizations to ensure that the needs of children and families are being met.
Please help Mercy Corps support families across Southeast Asia, tragically stricken by disaster during this holiday season, as they recover and rebuild their lives. Even as we mourn the victims, we must stand side-by-side with survivors.
Sincerely,
Greg Hesterberg & Tim Kunin
