Last week I posted a message about the payout for the 1970 NASCAR/STP Northern Tour for the Grand American series.
It seems that STP and the track owners had posted an additional $10,000 point fund for the five race series and IF a driver could win his qualifying heat and all five races he could pocket the huge sum of $7,250 for the tour.
Last Friday I received a press release with the posted amounts for the July 22 - 25th, four race weekend here at NHIS.
Friday the Featherlite Modifieds will be competing for $151,203 in posted awards in the New England 100.
Saturday the NASCAR Busch Series will be running in the New England 200 with $1,021,802 up for grabs.
Also on Saturday, the Busch North Series have another $207,761 on the line in the New England 125.
Finally, on Sunday, July 25th, the Nextel Cup Series competes for $5,074,134 in posted awards for the New England 300.
And NASCAR is on a downhill slide and going to implode?
I find that very hard to believe folks.
In that same message I posted a bit of trivia and no one apparently found the answer.
It's rather a shame that this driver who was without a doubt one of the most consistant and winningest stockcar drivers of all time is all but forgotten.
Ernie Derr raced in the IMCA late model stock division in the day when that sanction was as well known and important as the USAC late models and both were probably better known at that time than NASCAR.
Ernie had a total of 12 National Championships, seven of them consectutive, and something over 300 total wins in the oldest sanctioning body in continuous operation in this country.
Ernie's total accomplishments are not known as a fire destroyed many of the records of the day.
