Just noticed that the quicklie story for Nashville was not on the original post. Didn't get pasted in. So here it is:
August 25, 1973 - Cale Yarborough was the class of the field. He had led 126 laps, and though there are no guarantees seemed to have everything under control. A caution waved and on lap 261 while still under caution Cale's suddenly veered and crahed into the inside retaining wall. Cale drove the car to the pits and into the garage where it was repaired and returned to the race some 14 laps later. However, hishopes of garnering the checkers was pretty much gone.
After the race when asked what could possibly have happened Cales's response was surprising, though honest.
"I guess I just forgot what I was doing"
