The race for the top 10 in points

The race for the top 10 in points will be a very interesting battle. It is currently the most tight knit group in terms of points in the entire series. Currently only 130 points seperate 7th in points from 16th in points. Over 100 points seperate 6th and 7th and over 100 points seperate 16th and 17th. So these drivers are pretty much in the same league. It will be almost impossible for them to catch 5th in points (over 200 behind) and for them to fall lower than 20th in points (over 200 ahead).

Here are the drivers:
7 Kevin Harvick 2141
8 Tony Stewart 2129
9 Kurt Busch 2113
10 Sterling Marlin 2098
11 Rusty Wallace 2086
12 Mark Martin 2070
13 Jeff Burton 2057
14 Terry Labonte 2028
15 Robby Gordon 2023
16 Ryan Newman 2013

Any predicitions on who will end up where?

7. Ryan Newman

10. Robby Gordon
11. Kevin Harvick
12. Mark Martin
13. Terry Labonte
14. Rusty Wallace
15. Sterling Marlin
16. Jeff Burton

I see Newman,Stewart for sure and (hopefully)Busch all advancing.Robby,Mark and Jeff Burton all COULD advance.I like Terry but I look for him to slip along with Harvick....and I still am shocked how high Mikey is in the points!Sterling is a wildcard that could fall either way and so is Rusty,IMO.

7.Stewart
8.Busch
9.Newman
10.R.Gordon
11.Burton
12.Martin

7. Ryan Newman
8. Tony Stewart
9. Kevin Harvick
10. Terry Labonte
11. Kurt Busch
12. Mark Martin
13. Jeff Burton
14. Rusty Wallace
15. Sterling Marlin
16. Robby Gordon

7. Sterling Marlin
8. Toni Stewart
9. Kurt Busch
10. Ryan Newman
11. Kevin Harvick
12. Mark Martin
13. Rusty Wallace
14. Terry Labonte
15. Jeff Burton
16. Robby Gordon

Stewart is a lock.

Busch and Newman will be locks unless they start having mechanical failures, and these two seem to have mechanical failures more often than any other driver in this bunch. Either way I am sticking with them.

10th will be a wild card. Rusty and Sterling can go either way, they are pretty consistent in their 5th through 15th runs, nothing bad but nothing spectacular also.

Martin and Burton seem to have good races, then bad races, so jury is out on them.

I expect Labonte and Harvick to slide a little, historically they are not great late season performers.

Robby is a wildcard. Again like Martin and Burton, he looks great one race and just mediocre the next. But I feel Robby will have a pretty strong second half, last year Robby recorded one of the best point runs from the middle half on to almost the end out of every driver. This is when he made his run from 33rd in points last year to 18th, then he fell to 20th right at the end.

It should be interesting to watch, but here is my predictions:

7) Stewart
8) Newman
9) Busch
10) R. Gordon
11) Burton
12) Harvick
13) Marlin
14) Wallace
15) Martin
16) T Labonte

7- Stewart
8- Harvick
9- Busch
10-Marlin
11-Burton
12-Newman
13-Martim
14-Labonte
15-Gordon
16-Wallace

7. Tony Stewart
8. Sterling Marlin
9. Ryan Newman
10. Kevin Harvick
11. Kurt Busch
12. Rusty Wallace
13. Mark Martin
14. Terry Labonte
15. Jeff Burton
16. Robby Gordon

I like to think Tony will make it to the top 5. I think Busch and Marlin will for sure be in the top 10 and maybe Ryan.

Kurt Busch is a great driver but with the inconsistency he has faced he will certainly drop in points. I see Harvick, Newman and Stewart movin up.

Advancing to the top 5
5. Kevin Harvick :)

And all the rest
7. Tony Stewart
8. Rusty Wallace
9. Ryan Newman
10. Jeff Burton
11. Kurt Busch
12. Sterling Marlin
13. Mark Martin
14. Robby Gordon
15. Terry Labonte

1.Rusty Wallace

2.Tony Stewart

3.Matt Kenseth

4.Jeff Gordon

5.Dale Earnhardt Jr

6.Kevin Harvick

7.Kurt Busch

8.Jimmie Johnson

9.Ryan Newman

10.Bobby Labonte

Yeah Rusty is a shot in the dark but what the hell

Kevin Harvick has pulled ahead and is solidly in 7th in the standings. Sterling Marlin and Terry Labonte have lost ground and are 15th and 16th in the standings.

65 points seperate 8th from 14th in the standings. In the next race alone Robby Gordon (14th) can move up to 8th in the standings and Kurt Busch (8th) can fall to 14th in the standings. This has become the points race of the season so far.

8 Kurt Busch 2243
9 Tony Stewart 2226
10 Jeff Burton 2200
11 Rusty Wallace 2198
12 Mark Martin 2179
13 Ryan Newman 2178
14 Robby Gordon 2178

Quick fact (and interestingly enough it shows how much every point counts):

Robby Gordon finished 40th in the July Daytona race after getting caught up in the wreck with Kurt Busch. Had he finished 18th or better in that race (basically at least the last car on the lead lap) he would be 7th in points right now.

Damn that wreck. :p

Good point. Also to consider is the fact that Greg Biffle missed one race or in theory he could be as high as 14th-15th himself...adding another player to the mix.

Correct. Going by averages had Biffle ran that race and averaged his average finish (108 points per race) he would be in 17th in points, at 2052, around 80 behind Terry Labonte. A little behind, but certainly not out.
