The real reason of plates and horse power reduction
Not about drivers safety or ANY other reason
It's about POCKET BOOK SAFETY

Nine race fans settle over Speedway accident: Nine fans injured when a race car flew into a safety fence and sprayed debris in the grandstands at Daytona International Speedway last year have reached a settlement with the track. International Speedway Corp. will not release the amount of the settlement with the nine claimants represented by the Morgan & Morgan law firm, said Lenny Santiago, ISC senior director of public relations. Santiago declined to reveal details in the interest of the privacy of the fans involved. "I can say that we have reached settlements with several claimants related to the incident, but, as has been our practice throughout, we are not going to discuss any of the details," Santiago said. At least 28 spectators were injured including 14 who were taken to local hospitals when Kyle Larson's car crashed into the fence and sprayed a tire and other debris into the grandstands during the Nationwide Series Drive4COPD 300 on Feb. 23, 2013. Andrew Felix, an attorney with Morgan & Morgan, said the settlement covered all of the people represented by the personal injury firm, but he also declined to reveal the amount or any other details.(Daytona Beach News Journal)(5-2-2014)

Nascar's biggest fear is exactly what happen there. A car, or parts of a car, getting thru or over the fence and into the stands.

They won't remove seating in the rows closest, they'd lose money. So they force the owners to spend millions. Thing is everytime they 'slow' them down 5 years later they're just as fast if not faster.

I think you can be concerned about injuries and the death of drivers and fans, while also being concerned about the associated litigation, and bad PR. Not hypocritical at all, and I dont know why concerns about the associated cost disqualifies one from caring about the people.

I'm glad someone figured out how to respond to the original claim. I was speechless.

The plate was upon us when Bobby Allisons car went into the Talladega fence, it is that simple.

Already established a full generation before 2013 Daytona.

Yes, I think 27 years ago. That was pretty much before the litigious fan mentality.

They've been running reduced HP at Daytona for years.

I think the reason for moving towards reduced HP is to dumb it down for certain drivers so they might be able to compete at the Cup level.

Not going to mention any names but the first one that comes to mind rhymes with Panica.

Hard for some of u to catch on
Plates were put of the same reason as horse power reduction that is coming.

Err, those injuries were during the NW race. Is nascar talking about reducing power on the NW cars AND reducing cup car power to below what the NW cars had at the time of that accident??????

I didn't think so.

Thanks, because I don't buy this crap.

I figured that from you BOB

You r correct about nw race
So you must think that when the cup cars get a HP reduction the nw cars will be faster than the cup cars.
LMFAO BOB

I don't see a single piece of imperical evidence to suggest there's anything linking the reduction in HP to concerns about fan litigation.

Don't the tickets have a disclaimer about injury?
Attorney Gene Nichols says the disclaimer may not hold up in court

"Any court will find and strongly consider, that the waiver on the back of the ticket as not being enforceable. It doesn't establish that the individual read the ticket and even considered the express waiver," said Nichols.

Also, the fence itself failed at a particular point, which led to the speedway reinforcing the crossover gates.

Once again, your logic is faulty, which explains this whole thread. :p

They are slowing them down in hopes of taking some snooze out of the cookie cutter tracks.

Reducing the HP is just a band aid and denial in action that cannot walk away from their investments in those cookie cutters.

In that context slowing them down at the RP tracks is just a diversion or a miss.
And they have changed the rules packages at the RP tracks almost on a yearly basis, and that was the norm years prior to Feb 2013. Connecting it too the HP reductions that Nascar wants at all of the other tracks is a total miss, or unrelated imo.

Aren't races pretty much "at your own risk" event? Kind of like swimming without a lifeguard. Remove seats? What are pools gonna do, remove the water?

Did nascar even say they were going to slow the cars on plate tracks? Those run about 450 HP as it is.

Oh my goodness, all that just for Danica

Yes that's right, just for Danica.

It would have nothing to do with the media blitz and the 10's of millions of new fans it would likely bring into the sport if she could win a race.

I'm sure there are other reasons for reducing HP in the Cup series, but I bet dumbing the sport down so Danica might be able to compete has crossed nascars minds.

Nascar comes up with some dumb stuff but I seriously doubt they care whether Danica wins or not.

lol Yes, I'm sure nascar doesn't care if Danica wins by the way she's usually the first driver you see in their marketing spots.
They made her one of the premier faces of nascar but yea, they don't care if she wins or not.

We're talking about the sport that erases the real points over and over to create drama and interest in the sport at the end of the year.
Compared to that, reducing HP in the Cup series so Danica can keep up isn't so far fetched if you think about it.

ok so now nascar wants slower easier to drive cars for danica?

Affirmative action for racing?

Get real

It's funny seeing you telling me to 'get real' after you predicted a top 5 for Danica at Richmond. lol

Take your own advice?

jmo...

bobby going into the fence caught nascar's attention. how could it not? anyone want to imagine the carnage of a car getting into the stands?

my problem with the "restrictor plate" solution is that yes, it slows down the cars, making them less likely to take off like an airplane, and up and over the fence, BUT... by making the cars so they are unable to get away from each other, thus pack racing, it greatly increases the chances of wrecking in the first place.

I hate restrictor plate racing. so i'm never going to be a fan of reducing horsepower. in my opinion the only solution is to move away from the tracks that have been made obsolete by the technology of the cars.

and by the way, that injury waiver don't mean spit when it comes to a good lawyer proving negligence.

If they NASCAR was truly concerned about this, then why would they try and abolish the tandem drafting and try to get back to pack racing?

If anyone is Catholic they might want to administer the final rites to this thread.

Don't the tickets have a disclaimer about injury?

Ask any racetrack promoter, that doesn't matter. The waiver you sign for pit passes is different - you actually sign those and assume responsibility for any injury. A disclaimer on a ticket though.... not so much. It'd be like if a stage collapsed on people at a concert or a fire broke out at an indoor concert and killed a ton of people - it doesn't matter what's on the ticket, the event promoters are still liable.
