The sad thing about the Chase is that it makes it almost impossible to compare the drivers of yesteryear with the current group of drivers that we have today.
NASCAR has become such a greedy money monster.
Everyone keeps talking about whether or not Gordon can tie 7 Championships.
Surely NASCAR has screwed Gordon out of at least 2 more.
In another thread people talk of how steady Clint Bowyer has been. Are you kidding me? The only reason Bowyer even has a shot at the Cup trophy is because of this mickey mouse Chase.
Under the old format, Bowyer would be over 700 points out of first. Beloved Jimmie would be almost 500 points out of first. Clearly, neither would be worthy, this year, of being called "The Best."
In the old days, half of these guys would have trouble getting a job as a grille brusher.
The main problem with the Chase is that it takes away from the people that really deserve to be called Champion and gives a shot to those that never could.
What NASCAR should do is take the first part of the year off and then toward the end of the year host 10 races and call the most consistent driver the almighty Champion. After all, isn't that what they're doing?
I know, all things evolve and change is certain, but NASCAR is sacrificing the sport for another extra dollar.
Sorry, just had to vent. Still beats the hell out of stick and ball. :D

Which 2 years was Gordon beat out of a championship because of the Chase? I'll go with 2004 as one, but there isn't another that I can see.

The other side is if there is no Chase now, Gordon has a 500-point lead over 2nd place and interest shifts to football. The championship would be clinched after Texas. There are pros and cons to everything.

So what if he has a 500 point lead. He earned it. He has been the best this year so far. I am no more intrested in the sport because of the chase, if anything i am less.

I can understand drag racing having a "playoff" because it's one car vs one car. and not 43 out there at the same time.

Trust me, I was no fan of the Chase idea when it came up. But even though I didn't like, it has made me interested in it when a couple of years it would have been a runaway.

If they want to have a real Chase format, they should take the top 12 drivers and let just them race the final 10 races in 100-mile or 100-lap races. Let the other teams qualify for their own race and set it at 200 miles or 200 laps, run it the same day, and run it first. I guarantee you they'd see some hard racing in those last 10 races among the 12 Chase cars.

I would rather see someone run away with the Championship because they earned it, than have it taken away from them because somebody else who would have been 700 points behind them had good luck in the last few races.

If the Chase was around from the beginning we wouldn't have great Champions like Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon.

The Champion should be based on the whole season, not, the last 10 races. We can arque this until the cows come home but it is as Brian wants it to be.

That Bowyer has a chance to win the Championship is a travesty. It makes a sham of what Nascar is supposed to be about. It makes a mockery of Nascar's past. It's a travshamockery.
I don't turn the channel to watch the NFL when the race is on. But, then I'm a college football junkie and CFB will win out on Saturday.
I don't have an answer of how they can compete with the NFL. I don't know that they can. But, with changing the landscape every year, to keep tweaking the format, IMO all that's doing is selling the past fans out trying to attract the new fans. This is a battle they're going to lose.

...why do you say that BP he's been consistant all year.....and in old points he would be right up there....would'nt he. I'm sure someone can give us old points standings

In the old point standings he would be 600 points behind......which is not even close with 5 races to go.

I wanted to stay out of this conflict, but I couldn't resist. There was a time when Richard Petty got more points for coming in last than the winner got. Everything is only relavent to what is going on at the present. The Chase is just that, a competition at the end of the season for a certain amount of drivers. I know that many just can't stand this format, but for God's sake, it's here to stay and you can take it or leave it. BTW, can you tell me how many Super Bowl Champions have won their division in the last seven years? Makes things pretty interesting doesn't it?

NASCAR is steering it's sport in the direction it wants, and you, me or anyone else is not going to change that direction. But I can see them trying to make things more interesting in the last part of the seaon by allowing more and more drivers to vie for the title. As such, it may or may not taint the title but we all still look at King Richard Petty's feat of 200 wins. That is a feat that will never be equaled unless they change thing dramatically. Richard didn't have the competition all of the drivers have today and he raced in many more races each and every year than is anywhere close to what these guys drive, even if they compete in the Busch series as well. Maybe if they did all three series, Cup, Busch and truck series, but then again...

I haven't liked the direction that NASCAR has been taking the sport in the last ten to fifteen years, but the Chase is one thing that I do like. There are pluses and minusses to the Chase, but overall, it makes the last ten races a totally different chase than in years past.

The sad thing about the chase is going to be 600,000 hms fans jumping out windows when Gordon and Johnson's luck runs out at homestead, and Bowyer wins the cup....

Why are you guys picking on Bowyer?

I agree with a lot of what’s been said. I like that the chase tightens up some drivers at the end and keeps me interested. I don't like it for the same reason. Like someone said earlier, if a guy has a huge lead at the end of the season, then he earned it.

I feel bad for the guys past the 12 chasers. Who is to say that the 13th guy doesn’t have a chance? NASCAR basically takes their chances away if you think about it. Since the chase started, has there been an instant where someone locked out could have won the title? Or has come close?

I suspect that Martinsville will take Bowyer further out of the running.

Im sorry sledge, even after he wins it this year they will still pick on him.

I am a big Jeffy fan!

That said I hope Boyer wins it by 10 points.. I am so tired of this "chase" thing I am ready for the 12th place guy to win just to see all the controversy..
Betsy:rolleyes:

Do you think NASCAR would really care? They would take that as excitement.

oh mmm gee i don't know, Maybe to qualify for the chase? :owquitit:

If it where Bowyer or Harvick who had a 700 point lead and a HMS driver came from the back to win the cup you wouldn't have a problem with it.

Not so, go back and read the posts in prior years when Tony and Kurt won the Chase.

Everyone hates kurt, If he won by a million points everyone would say he didnt deserve it.:(

Now that's not true. I only think he acts like an idiot about 1/2 the time. :D
Seriously, one minute I think he's a nice guy and then he pulls something bone-headed and I think, uh... what is wrong with you?!! Then again, I used to think that about Tony, but now I really like the guy. The man has a temper, but he also cracks me up. :) Not to mention, he's a great driver... esp. when his crew doesn't get him smashed up in the pits or Denny doesn't back into him at 200 mi/hr. LOL ;)

Now, it's obvious I'm a huge Jeff fan and I think he deserves this Championship and if he doesn't win it, I will be really disappointed. (Ok, I'm sure I'll say Jeff was robbed and a bunch of other stuff... ;) ) That being said, I think Clint is a great young talent and a class act. I hope to see many more good things to come for him. He can come in 2nd in the Chase and that would be OK with me. heh heh :swords:

I can't take credit for the idea but why not do like CBB. They have the NCAA for the Championship. Then there's the NIT for next round. Do that in Nascar.
1st 12 runs for the Cup Championship and the next 12 run for the NIC (Nextel Invitational Chase) to determine who finishes 13th. Reset their points using the same rules as the 1st 12 and that is their tier's Champion, that goes to NY (or Vegas) for the Awards.
And, let's face it if you're not in the top 24 you really don't have much to cry about not being included in either Chase.

I like that bp. But even if they did that, there would still be those who would complain. Jeez, it's the same things over and over. I hate this and I hate that. Those people must love misery.

buckaroo, I simply prefer the "old Method" of determining the Championship. call it complaining if you want but that is my preference. :)

btw, the current Trivia Question indicates what has/is happening in Nascar.

I understand Muggle, but nonetheless, there's no sense in continuing to complain about something that isn't going to change. And you are right about the current trivia question. The trend for NASCAR these days is to not only nationalize it, but to internationalize it, leaving those home grown late model driver out there to continue to drive late models. Did someone mention how close to the old CART this series is becoming?

Oh, and btw, there are still those people who oppose the DH in MLB, but that too is water under the bridge. If you want to live in the past, that's your decision. :)

LOL, I am one of those that don't like the Designated Hitter rule. Guess that is why I continue to be a national Leaque fan.I have been a fan of the Pirates since the 1940's. I am one of those Baseball Nuts when it comes to remembering the players on the teams of old.:)

Hmmm, well I'm a White Sox fan, so that answers that! :)

Oh to remember Kent Tekulve. Now that was a sidewinder. :)

Yeah, he was with the Pirates for many year including the World Series year in 1979.
