This is a press release from the Board of Governors of the Columbus Citizens Foundation regarding NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg's decision to invite cast members of The Sopranos to Monday's Columbus Day Parade.

While I agree with the Board of Governors, I have to admit to being a fan of the show. I don't know what Mayor Bloomberg was thinking when he made this decision. Rudy would have known better. :(

SOPRANOS UNINVITED AND UNWELCOME IN COLUMBUS DAY PARADE

In response to published reports that Mayor Michael Bloomberg took it upon himself to invite members of the cast of The Sopranos to march in the Columbus Day Parade, the Board of Governors of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, the organizers and producers of the Parade for the past 58 years, wish to once again reiterate its policy that participation by anyone associated with this highly-offensive program has no place in a celebration of Italian-American pride and heritage.

As a Foundation dedicated to perpetuating the culture, traditions and positive contributions of Italian-Americans to our country, we are deeply offended by this program's extremely negative and ugly stereotyping of our people.

MAYOR'S ACTIONS INEXPLICABLE

Our Foundation prides itself on producing the most inclusive Parade in New York City with participation by over 35 distinct ethnic groups who join us in celebrating the immigrant spirit that made this country great. In fact, we have a long history of respecting the sensitivities of others as evidenced by our complete re-routing of the 2000 Parade to avoid disturbing Yom Kippur services at Temple Emmanuel on Fifth Avenue.

There is simply no place in a celebration of ethnic pride and heritage for the public display and promotion of a program that glorifies violence, debases women, and portrays Italian-Americans in the worst possible light.

Participation by any group or individuals who represent the worst in human nature and dignity is totally contrary to the goals of the Parade. For these reasons, we find the Mayor's actions inexplicable.

THE COLUMBUS CITIZENS FOUNDATION'S MISSION

The Foundation's mission is to preserve and enhance of Italian-American culture, traditions and values. We are a charitable organization that has in the last twelve months alone donated $1 million to the victims of the September 11th tragedy and another $1.5 million in scholarship aid to deserving students.

Over the years, we have extended our philanthropic efforts outside of our community by donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund for the children of Gulf War combatants, assistance for victims of the Turkish Earthquake and a host of other charitable endeavors.

LEGAL REMEDIES BEING CONSIDERED

We are presently attempting to reach out to the Mayor, a man whom we respect as an individual and as a proponent of anti-defamation causes for all ethnicities. We are calling upon him to reconsider any invitation, which may have been extended without our knowledge and against our wishes. We are deeply concerned that our right to stage the Parade within the dictates of our Mission Statement is being compromised by the Mayor's actions.

We call on members of all ethnicities to support our right to ban these negative stereotypes from the celebration of our Italian heritage. While we are attempting to engage the Mayor on this issue, we are fully prepared to take any course of action necessary to preserve our right to determine the content and tone of the Columbus Day Parade.

New York Mayor Will Not March Without Sopranos

Fri Oct 11, 3:10 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Friday he will not march in the Columbus Day parade because organizers have refused to let him bring actors from the hit television show "The Sopranos."

The Italian-American group Columbus Citizens Foundation, which has run the parade for 58 years, asked Bloomberg to rescind his invitation to two Sopranos cast members because it was "deeply offended by this program's extremely negative and ugly stereotyping of our people."

Bloomberg said during his weekly radio program that he would not march in Monday's parade without the actors.

"I'm sorry if anybody is annoyed but if my friends can't march, or people that I think have done things for the city, then I'll find some other way to celebrate the Italian heritage," he said.

The mayor previously said he had invited two cast members of the HBO show -- Dominic Chianese, who plays New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano's Uncle Junior, and Lorraine Bracco (news), who plays Soprano's psychiatrist -- to walk with him during the parade on Fifth Avenue because of the work they do for the city.

Bracco has been a spokeswoman on environmental issues and Chianese has made a public service announcement for tourism, Bloomberg said.

The Columbus Citizens Foundation sought a restraining order late Thursday that would stop Bloomberg from marching with the actors. After a court hearing on Friday, U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff said there was no reason to issue such an order.

BADDA BING: 'SOPRANOS' STAR FIRES BACK; CALLS NYC PARADE ORGANIZERS HYPOCRITES

SOPRANOS star Joe Pantoliano tells the WASHINGTON POST that the organizers of the Columbus Day Parade are 'hypocrites' for barring cast members of the hit HBO series from the annual New York City event.

'I don't know about this Christopher Columbus parade that is basically celebrating some guy who 500 years ago went out to find the Indies and instead found America and then killed all the Indians,' fumes Pantoliano to Lloyd Grove in Friday's 'Reliable Source'.

Pantoliano, who plays murderous wise guy Ralph Cifaretto, blasts the Columbus Citizens Foundation and the D.C. based National Italian American Foundation, which supports the ban.

'They want him to be their role model? God bless them. So now they're using our show to shine a spotlight on their cause.

'I personally feel that they're hypocrites.... These people need to wake up and smell the cappuccino.'

MORE examples of BIGOTRY in our Blessed country.

SHAME on That Italo-American society.

Pride goes to Mayor Bloomberg for being staunch in his beliefs.

Joey Pants told it true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, Kat, the Italian American group is trying to fight negative stereotypes of Italians as gangsters. If anything, The Sopranos promotes bigotry. At least, that's what they're alleging.

However, I don't think it's all that big a deal. I'm Italian, but I enjoy mafioso movies and t.v. shows, as do most people I know. My father hates the mafia, but loves the fictionalized entertainment they bring us. I'm not sure where he stands on this issue, however.

Come to think of it, I'm not so sure where I stand on this issue.

I understand your point, but entertainment comes in all forms.
AND so does bigotry.
I lived in mafiosa territory in MA and RI, both called "little Italy"

On Federal Hill in RI, one hardly heard english. aaaaaaaayyy
