TYLER, Texas -
A sport utility vehicle taking children to a water park veered out of control and flipped on an East Texas interstate, killing five children and injuring the other seven people on board.
The crash happened about 2:15 p.m. Monday on Interstate 20 near the town of Van, about 70 miles east of Dallas.
Texas Department of Public Safety officials said there were a total of 12 people in the SUV. They are still investigating what caused the vehicle to leave the road and overturn, ejecting nine people.
All of those killed were children. Three girls, ages 13, 6 and 2, died at the scene. Another 5-year-old boy and 3-year-old whose gender is unspecified died at the hospital, officials said.
Five other children and two adults were taken to hospitals in Tyler and Dallas. No conditions or identities were released.
DPS reported there were no child car seats in the vehicle and none of the passengers in the back were wearing seat belts.
Investigators don't know how many of the people in the SUV were related.
"We don't have any information as to the identification of all the children in the vehicle because of a language barrier between the driver and passenger of the vehicle and our officer. So we're continuing to work on that," a DPS spokesman said.
They believe the group was headed to Splash Kingdom, a water park in Canton, because everyone had on swimsuits and there were coolers in the SUV.
