Patrick is going to "back" to her unlimited car. I guess they repaired it and she is going to be fielding this car. So back to the back with alot of other good cars.

Why?

Can one car REALLY be that much better than others?

Jeff Gordon is going to be tough to beat. He looked fast in single car runs.

Drivers from Richard Petty to Jimmie Johnson have had cars they preferred over others.
 
@Revman I wonder if you could shed some light here...a race engine...do they run BRAND new ones each race or do they just redo the heads, etc and every other race get a fresh engine?

Good question and I am looking forward to the answer. In years past most teams used a grenade engine to qualify and then put in a race engine after qualification until Nascar changed the rules. JMO but I would think at a track like Daytona the most important thing in qualifying would be pit selection and where you start would not really make a difference. From that standpoint you could change the engine and start at the back.

Every engine gets at least a freshening after every race. I don't know how many races a particular engine is actually used in competition.

Correct ... fresh engines for every event. All of the engine pieces, including the block and cylinder head castings, are treated like aircraft parts. Everything has a shelf life ... measured in hours, miles, duty cycles or whatever the builder/supplier has chosen.

When parts are "timed out" they're replaced with new pieces.

Couldn't have said it any better than this. Aunty--When we hear talk of a "new spec" engine, is that an engine with a significant number of new parts and/or redesigned parts, and perhaps a new direction in terms of engine tune....or something else entirely?
 
I wonder how the one engine one race rule works for this race. Lots more practice and the Dual event. I am thinking they get an exception that allows them to replace it prior to the 500.

I saw this on Jayski a while back:

  • Engine Rule at Daytona: The engine rule is a little different at Daytona 500 [just like qualifying] than the other 35 races, teams must run the same engine from Saturday's first practice session through the Budweiser Duel 150 mile qualifying races. If a team makes a change before the Duel, then it must start at the rear of the Duel 150 field as well as the Daytona 500. After the Duel 150 races, teams can make an engine change before the Happy Hour practice session. After that, if an engine change is made, the driver will start at the rear of the Daytona 500.
 
so basically after each race the entire engine is stripped down to a block, all parts are replaced according to a schedule, the block is then reassembled and used again if they see fit to use it.

Yes. In the meantime, the hauler leaves for the next event loaded with different car / engine combos.

Wait so Ryan Newman is going to the back for the Daytona 500 too? I thought they were clear once they got through the duels, like backup cars x:
