Eric is a fellow woodworker who lives just a few miles from me. A year ago Oct he was let go by Fidelity Investments, he was one of their IT computer guru's. Landed a job with Amica Ins last week, a very good job he says with long term security. Yah for him.
Mike owns a sawmill and a woodworking business, mostly custom built fences, pergella's, decks, benches any other outside stuff etc. He just hired 2 guys to keep up.
Maybe, just maybe the corner while not being completely turned at least we're approaching it.:D

I just got called back after a 5 month lay off. Actually I got called back at the end of January. Was told we'll be working 10 hours a day plus Saterdays until the end of summer. I have a new appreciation for going to work now.

That first week back however was rough. I got a little to used to watching Law and Order and had to get used to being on my feet all day.

The number of jobs that are being bid on in the Power Industry has picked up. I anticipate hiring in that field in the near future.

I dunno if they are going to hire or just make sure they keep the workers working that they have.
An engineering company I am familiar with has hired a few and if they get the several Power Plant jobs they are bidding on they will be hiring a large number of engineers / designers. There will be many, many craft people hired during the construction, ironkorkers, pipefitters, electricians, etc. In addition there are several Nuclear power plants under design. Staffing for these plants is in the preliminary stages and will require huge numbers, especially during construction.

Looks like some things are picking up as others are still down and going down further

IBM laid off 1,614 people on Monday as part of its latest round of job cuts, according to a union trying to organize the company's workers.

The Alliance@IBM predicts IBM will cut about 2,000 jobs in the United States and Canada in this round.

The cuts are affecting IBM's operations in Research Triangle Park and other locations nationwide, the group reports. IBM does not comment of layoffs as a matter of corporate policy.

The Alliance@IBM has is keeping a running tally of the job cuts on its web site, www.endicottalliance.org. The numbers come from severance packages provided to affected workers that spell out terms and indicate the number of people affected in each business unit.
