JR says the car owners own the car numbers? I thought that nascar leased the number, and the team could keep the number for as long as it was bought, before being put back on the list of open numbers? I wonder how much teresa would want for the owner points and car number?

You are correct, MH. NASCAR "owns" the numbers --- DEI would have first choice of the #8. If they did not renew the lease, the number would be open to any team. DEI could sell their choice to someone.

DEI would retain the owner points for another number. They could also sell the owner's points associated with the #8, if they chose. However, I imagine the price would be very, very high.

The owners points for the #8 may not worth a whole lot by next Feb. ;)

Since Dale will prolly have to start next year OUT of the top 35, why would he leave the #8 IN the top 35 for the next driver? If it was MY stepmom she'd have to get that car back in the top 35 with the new driver...if any.

I think the numbers can be transferred, but not the points unless the team is bought. So the points for the #8 accumulated for this year would stay with DEI unless Junior's team actually buys the team. Mikey bought the #32 and got the points. I think he had to buy something from Wells to do that, not just buy the use of the number.

I suppose we may also be overlooking the fact that #8 could be the 2007 Nextel Cup winner.

After race 5 or 6 last years points don't count. It goes to the current year.

Those first 5 or 6 races are critical...ask Mikey.
Betsy

They are critical. If they make it thru the first 5 in good shape it will be ok. Mikey can't get near the top 35 just making one race.
