September 4, 1950: Johnny Mantz wins the third Grand National race run on a paved raceway, winning the Southern 500 at Darlington. It is also the first 500-mile race. Seventy-five cars start the race, and Mantz leads 351 of the 400 laps. Mantz starts 43rd and picks up his only Grand National victory by more than nine laps over Fireball Roberts.

And people want to say how great those races were and that the ones today that are determined in feet are so boring...not to mention almost no one actually saw those races since they weren't televised...and I dare say many on here were too young to remember listening to the races on the radio...but whatever...
