about Kurt Busch:

If it weren't for a terrible August, Busch might be the points leader.

Accidents and blown engines don't win championships -- and Kurt Busch is painfully finding that out.

Busch's accident at Indianapolis -- after his infamous run-in with Jimmy Spencer -- started a three-race losing streak where he scored only 131 points due to the accident and two engine failures.

If Busch had averaged just a 14th-place finish in each of those races -- 121 points per race -- Busch would have about a 100-point points lead.

In the last 11 races, Busch has finished on the lead lap nine times even though he has not qualified in the top five for any of those races.

Add his name to a list of of about 13 guys that could realistically win the Cup next year.

What a difference a year makes (and a veteran crew chief). This kid was practically invisible last year.

Still one of my least favorites, but he does have talent.

I honestly think that all 4 of the Roushies (sorry Biffle) have a legitimate shot at it next season. Toss in both Gibbs cars, The Glamor Twins (Jeffie and Jimmie), both Penske rides, DJ, and Sterling and we could be looking at an even better championship race than this season's.

And yes, I did leave RCR, BDR, DEI, Bill Elliott and others out. That was not an error, I meant to leave them out. :p

Thanks for the clarification TWF. I will have to agree with you for the most part (but I'm not clarifying which part):p

I'ld leave em out too. The are quickly becoming the middle class of Winston Cup and Petty and Davis will be the first of the group to reach the have-nots.

I think the real killer for his title hopes was the motors he's blown this season. Watch out next season though, this kid is on a role.

During a period of idle time last week, I began mulling over possible 2003 title contenders. The one name that kept popping into my mind was Matt Kenseth. But I'm starting to re-evaluate Kurt. He's got a little more moxey than I thought he had.

I still think it'll be Bobby Hamilton though. :p

This kid has talent, they just need to get the shop a little better on the motors, and he could be contending next year.
