The Herd of Turtles at The Monster Mile

Non-regulars by owner points…….#49 Lepage, #71 Sauter, #74 Raines, #66 Fukuyama, #189 Sheperd, #127Shelmerdine, and #27 Wimmer. Two teams are out of provisionals (#23 Kenny Wallace, and #11 Brett Bodine) making a total of 6 teams in go fast or go home mode before they even get to the track.

Race 13 at Dover saw Tony Raines put a sister car (the 73) in to the field in the 17th spot while Dick Trickle wheeled the 71 to a 29th place on the grid. Bodine in the 11 car qualified 26th.

Finishing on the lead lap in July’s Busch Race were Scott Wimmer, and Kenny Wallace though they both qualified poorly. Lepage qualified well, with Raines in the middle and Sauter towards the back.

Can pretty well figure the 11, 71, and 74 cars to be quick enough to possibly get in on time, while the last time the 23 with Hut Stricklin at the wheel was at Dover it needed a provisional to make the show. Bodine and Raines have both been here before, and Sauter is a short track specialist. Kenny may know his way around the track, but even his experience might not help the 23. Scott Wimmer in the Bill Davis entry may be the wild card that keeps Fukuyama from making his debut if either Wallace or Bodine fail to get up to speed.

Look for Sheperd, Shelmerdine, Wimmer and Wallace to be packing up early.

And as always......your experience, opinions, and mileage may vary.

im curious how the jap will do.....i really dont see wallace not making it sorry but i dont see sauter or raines making it but i could be wrong (like usual):satisfied

Not a bad accessment 71........think I agree with you 100% (or close anyway).:)

Thanks, I never thought of that way.:D

Guess you missed last night's thing about the racial stuff and Fukuyama Zoe!! Hang on........here it comes!!:D

No, I commented in that thread.

I know you commented in that thread

"It because of people like this that NASCAR will forever be disimissed as a sport for rednecks and nothing better than the WWF.

Makes me embarrassed to say that I am a NASCAR fan."

And that is why I told zoe to hang on.

I do believe that I heard somewhere that he just wants to be called "Joe". Go figure.

Wallace is the pre-race man on the bubble. Without a prov to use he has to make the race on time in a car that was more than 6/10ths off the pace last time out there. Concrete cars are a different breed of animal and the 14 is not quite yet a hybrid.

Without the provisional system, the 14 and 11 cars would only have made 2/3's of the races so far. Not sure Kenny (or anybody else for that matter) can get the 14 up to speed on concrete while Brett has shown that he can make the field if things go his way.

Hey TWF, it's a very tight call from where I sit. If ya woulda said "Book it Dano" I might have had to give it to ya but without the Dano it's not enuf to make me change my mind.:p

Yikes, Zoe, I know you've heard this before, but I've heard you call out people on what you thought was racist (when talking about black v white) but actualy, that's exactly what I'd call this post (and this thread to whoever started it.....)

I implore you fellow nascar fans to not judge a driver bsed on race, religion, or national origin, etc. To the best driver Cheers! on whoever he (or she) is!

This thread is ok, it started out innocently enough...and I apologize for it turning this way 71Fan.

It's that other thread that got locked that's off-color.

No need Paul but thanks anyways. With a possibility of 9 instead of 7 provs up for grabs Fukuyama has a very good chance of making it should Bodine or Wallace faulter and nobody behind the 66 steps up.

I'm kinda thinkin that it might be best to leave the predictions out from now on so as not to create controversy. It's one thing to watch the twirling dervishes spin and quite another to give them a push. Best to let em spin.:D

oops, meant to say 9 spots instead of provs but that's not really true anyways.....more like room for 5 non-regulars instead of what has become the normal 3 this year.

It will be interesting to see if Hideo Fukuyama can make his debut. He's a very talented driver, and for those of you who remember, he has raced with the Cup guys before... at the special race they held for a few years in Japan.

This is what I found for the 1998 race:
NASCAR Thunder Special Motegi Coca-Cola 500
Started 21st, Finished 17th of 31 cars
98
Hideo Fukuyama
Ultra Shield
Ford Thunderbird

I'd have to rely on HardScramble on whether or not Hideo was at the other one or two races they held in Japan. I remember him b/c his car was a last minute entry, and the whole car's paint scheme consisted of decals covering what used to be one of I believe Rusty Wallace's old cars.

All well and fine...except Kenny Wallace does not drive the 14, he drives the 23. Mike Wallace drives the 14. :)

Well oopsie daisy and tan my hide. It's still the 23 that is out of provs. Thanks for pointing out my confusion. All other facts about the 23 remain tho.

And you still didn't say "Danno"

Awright, Dano... :) I'm here to tell you that BDR is gonna be the hot team this weekend among those outside the elite (Roush, Yates, Hendrick, JGR, Evernham). I have had the sneaky feeling all week that Ward is gonna have the car to beat Sunday. Now you know I don't often go out on THAT limb, I'm a realist. The last time I had a gut feeling this strong about something, Jeff Green finished second at NH version 1.0. Something tells me BDR is gonna be strong. Kenny ain't ever gonna be compared with David Pearson adn Bobby Allison, but he ain't no Hut Stricklin either. He'll make it on time or I'll eat my Bucs hat, and I need my Bucs hat. That's where you keep your Buccaneers ya know...under yer buckin hat. :D

I look for Burton to do good this weekend also,Jeff. ;) Ward will be up front,a top 10 I do believe. As far as Joe as he wants to be called should make the race, but I don't look for any spectacular showing.I wish the international driver a safe race though.I did hear Tony,Jimmy,Kurt, and Ward were taking Kung Fu lessons this week.:p

Well alrighty then TWF. Wou;d hate see you lose a spot to keep yer Bucs.

And I too will admit that whichever Wallace it is....Kenny right?... that Hut is easily outclassed. Kenny is the hardest call imo.

Probably best for me to not speculate in the future. Sure don't need a rap that includes "That stupid son of a buck has no idea what he's talking about" if I'm going to make the jump from "any fool with a keyboard and a modem" to "highly respected motorsports writer.":D :D :D :D :D

Hideo Fukuyama ran all three WC exhibitons in Japan in 1996, 1997, and 1998. He also competed in two Winston West events, the first in 1998 at Pikes Peak and in 1999 at Montegi, Japan.

!996 - Suzuka, Japan - #23 Camel Ford - Qualified 18 - Finished 22

1997 - Suzuka, Japan - Qualified 24 - DNF, ignition - Credited with 21st

1998 = Thunder at Montegi - Qualifed 24th - Finished 17th, 7 laps down.

Winston West Events:

1998 - Pike Peak, CO - Qualified 30th Finished 19th

1999 Montegi, Japan - Qualified 21st, - Finished 15th

Hideo has a very impressive resume of GT racing in Japan, winning at least one chamionship. I have no clue how intense the competition is in this series. I lso believe he has run some endurance sport car events in both the US and Europe.

Thanks HS......Winston West stuff is far from a pushover series, and best guess is that the Japanese take their racing series very seriously.

Travis Carter is no rookie at putting cars together. The 66 will be well prepared for battle in the concrete jungle. Whether Hideo can handle the throttle thru the dips coming of the turns for an entire race let alone a pedal to the metal lap is one of the unknowns, but Carter calls him one of the most dedicated drivers he's ever seen and also sez they learned a lot in an earlier test there.

Who knows? This guy just might be the real deal.

Seems that Hideo can bring some cash to the deal, which will help.

From what I recall, Hideo only had one shortened test session at Dover. Dover is not the most difficult WC oval, but is far from the easiest.

Seems, they will test this gentleman pretty severely if plans follow through. After Dover the plan calls for entries at Martinsville and Rockingham. A test seesion is sceduled for early October at Martinsville. Both of thse track as well as Dover are pretty challenging venues for any driver. Martinsville may be especially challenging as brake and tire conservation play such a large role on raceday. Rockingham and Dover may both play out as tire management races as well, Rockingham almost always does.

Hideo is 47 years old, so he should bring some maturity to the scenario which can be very beneficial at these tracks.

Course he will need a good banzai run to get in the field...and that is the common slang for the qualifying runs in case anyone feels that was barbed.:)

I was at the 1998 Winston west race at PPIR, I don't remember this guy. I think all anyone cared about was Ken Schrader and Michael waltrip lapping the field a couple of times. I don't think anything will become of this, he prolly won't even make the field.

I think being 47 years old is kinda late to break into Winston Cup.

Wow I didn't know he was 47.He will be hanging over at the Viagra garage for sure.:p

I wish "Joe" hideo a speed fast enough to make the field.

Hey pb, Paul Newman still occasionally drives his own F1 car for fun and competes in rally races too. :p

OK Paul, but that's not what it says on HIS homepage, but I have no idea when it was last updated. PURRRRRRRRRR

Before he gets to the Viagra hauler, he will have to fight his way through a sea of reporters, and fans . Hope he has enough energy. But, seriously folks, I hope this guy makes the race. It will be interesting to see what he's got. Even though he has experience, there is nothing that can prepare you for the WC experience.

Updated Turtle List by Owner Points.

Non-regulars by owner points…….#49 Lepage, #71 Sauter, #74 Raines, #66 Fukuyama, #189 Sheperd, #127 Shelmerdine, #151 Long, and #27 Wimmer.

Talk about a bunch of guys in go fast or go home mode. Here's hoping they can all make the race.

I think Kat maybe right, they do sell off the old F1 cars. I do know for many years he competed in the SCCA as P.L. Newman, it doesn't say he competes in F1, prolly rents out Lime Rock and does some laps in his own car to clear his head. Just my .02 cents worth.
