Gordon has shot to be first to hit $80 million: Six years after his final victory, Dale Earnhardt's record of 11 restrictor-plate victories can be tied this weekend in the UAW-Ford 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. If that record is matched, Jeff Gordon has also tied "The Intimidator's" career total of 76 wins in the Nextel Cup Series - and eclipsed the $80 million mark for career race winnings [which includes point funds, championships, etc].(Performance PR Plus), Gordon is currently at $79,882,400, needing $117,000.

That's a WHOLE BUNCH OF $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

im a sr fan, but it was bound to happan.

look at pettys money over the years. its not as much as dales and he won 200 races, so to me this is not a big deal.

Jeff is good at the plate tracks, but i just thought dale had more then 11 plate wins

Of course it's bound to happen. Obviously Sr can't increase his wins from 76.
Unlike some, Sr was still quite capable of winning before his career ended. It could have reached 90 or 100 if he retired when he wanted to.

Exactly right. Also money paid out is so much higher now then when "E" was doing all his winning and racing. So the money paid out is not really a fair comparison.

more power to him if and when he does it.
i'm really not one for records, i really could care less if all of dale records get broken, it will never change my opinion of him as a driver or a man. i miss him more every season

Jeff is a truly talented driver and deserves all the accolades. He has my total respect. I congratulate him on his success.
Kudos to you for your post.

btw, I still have my cereal bowl with the picture of Jeff and Dale on it with the caption: The Kid and the Champ.

muggle A picture of Jeffy and perhaps Denny could have the same caption today..
I do not understand how folks cannot label Jeffy as the "champ".. That moniker fits only him in today's racing. He is the true champ of today. Numbers seldom lie.
Betsy ;)

Taking stats when "E" raced prior to JGordon coming on the scene, "E" raced in 428 events and had a total of 55 wins.

When "E" and JGordon raced in the same events, a total of 261 point races, "E" gathered 24 wins to JGordons 52 wins.

Understanding competition got much keener with engineering playing a bigger role today than it did, and using available statistics, JGordon would have surpassed "E" even if they had continued to race to the present day although the wins for both drivers would have been fewer and the length of time for JGordon to overtake "E" longer than in the early years.

And in conclusion, what does all this mean ????? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Draw your own conclusions but JGordon would have more wins than "E" even if they were still in competition today. At least from my POV. Which is more often than not, incorrect.:)
