Time to can the Duels?

I am a fan of heat race style racing. Problem is it doesn't matter where you start anymore you can get to the front quick. Its more about guessing where the big one will be and run the duel to start ahead of it if you can. NHRA still has the right idea if you arent fast enough you arent gonna be in the show. Unfortunately nascar's arguement to that would be you dont see their exposure like you use to and blame it on that. Not trying to start anything with NHRA fans im just trying to make a point that the lock in crap is bs.

Here's the biggest argument for franchising. But then you'd never have more than 43 cars vying for the pole or starting position.

Seems the further down the road we go, the more complex NASCAR becomes.

I think the top 35 can be good and bad. I believe the top 35 brings some sponsorship money to the sport. Take a low funded team that busted its butt to get into the top 35 the year before, it would be easier for that team to get sponsorship money knowing for sure that they will be in the 500.
I believe without the top 35 the racing probably would be better. The teams that don't worry about qualifying would have to and this might even the racing up a little.
If I had to do it I would make them qualify their way in, and any past champion would make the race.

You don't see any major motorsports exposure anymore except for what Danica Patrick exposes for GoDaddy and SI. The media that seems to have a lot of influence doesnt want you to know that racing is more diverse than their precious stick and ball sports.

Do you see mention of The Daytona 500 anywhere on ESPN, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, HLN, CSN? No. But theyhave A-Rod and Lebron James plastered on the front page of every website.

The media can't keep repeating the same stereotypes about racing like they usedtocould now that we have diverse races competing very well. They can't keep their stereotypes on anymore. Notice when they were talking about the NASCAR lawsuit on MSNBC, they didn't bring in a racing expert as they spewed their drivel because they knew a racing expert would've slapped them down while reading off names: Lewis Hamilton, Danica, Antron Brown, James Stewart, Marc Davis, Ashley Force Hood, Hillary Will, Jesus Hernandez, Juan Pablo Montoya, Nur Ali, Melanie Troxel, Alli Owens, Gabi DiCarlo...(that's just in 15 seconds:))

In fact, I bet ESPN already regrets giving Ed Hinton a keyboard and internet access.

I think qualifying for Cup should be ditched completely. The point of Cup racing is not to see who the fastest cars are for one lap, but for 500 miles, 400 miles, 500 laps, etc.

I think what NASCAR should do is only lock in the top 20 cars in points. Line them up by points each week. Take the other cars and run them in two consolation races. The consolation races would vary in length depending on the size of the track. Daytona and Talladega would be 20 laps, Bristol and Martinsville would be 50 laps. The 1.5-mile tracks would be 34 laps. The remaining 3 spots would go to the top drivers in points not already locked in, that way they get in just in case they get crashed in a consi. If a points champion is not locked in, he gets the last spot and only 2 non-transferring drivers get the other two spots. These races would be ran on Fridays when the race is on Sunday. This would help the track owners that sell tickets to pole qualifying on that day by offering actual racing. The top 20 teams would not get on the track at all on Friday.

Then on Saturday, there would be one 2-hour practice session for the top 20 cars only. No practice for the other 23 cars that run in the consis.

I like the duals!

The duals gave me something to watch on a Thursday! How can anyone be against that?
Betsy:rolleyes:

I like the idea of go fast or go home although it is not my choice, I do understand why NASCAR has locked in positions.
But I also like the idea posted by MRM and would like to see more discussion pro and con. Sounds like a pretty interesting concept and if there were a change, it would be; if the top twenty were locked in, they start in reverse order at the top twenty positions with the remainder of the field at the rear.

All thoughts pro and con on the post by MRM will be welcome. :)

Just throwing out random thoughts. Under MRM's plan would the top 20 be inverted? Or top 10? Wouldn't either way completely eliminate anyone other than those in the top 20 a chance to win the pole award?

How would pit selection be done? The fastest qualifier now gets first pick, like it used to be with the last years champ?

Would it be practicle to go back in time short track style with a A main, B main and consi? I don't know if like other series do (is it F1?) with all the cars on track running and your best lap determines starting position would be feasible.

How about a draw, same as they do to determine the line up for qualifying? Although that would elimninate the pole award too.

I really think it should be the fastest 43, no lock-ins due to top 35 in points, no past champ provisional.

Just my 2.8¢ (adjusted for inflation,, ;))

I always thought that this is the best way for all the races, but then again i don't pay the bills....lol.

The Duels are good.

Locking in the Top 35 is beyond stupid. I much preferred the old system with 7 provisional spots to keep the big names in the race.

I hate the top 35 rule. I think that the top 40 in speed, two points provisionals and one past championship (only within 10 years of last title.) If no PC, the 41st qualifier. I personally hate the duels because most working people can't watch the race except on TiVo, someone can qualify 50th and suddenly start the race 6th because they drafted, er, raced their way in. So, make it like very other race. They could save tons and not confuse their everyday fans.

The top 20 would draw for their starting spots. The pole award isn't what it used to be. They trashed the idea of the pole winners in the Bud Shootout. If they want to keep that format, it makes winning a pole even more meaningless.

Pit stalls would be selected based off finishing order of the previous race. That would offer more incentive to win races. Any cars getting in that was not in the previous race would get pick of the final spots that are available, determined by order of finish in their consi.
