I have not been a fan of the lucky dog rule since it was put in. I call it welfare racing, giving someone something for doing nothing.

But if NASCAR is going to insist on keeping that ridiculous rule, it needs to be modified. Someone I chat with on another board actually came up with this idea. Any driver should only be awarded with the lucky dog one time during a race. How many times have we seen drivers get this mutliple times during the same race? Kyle Petty gets 2 or more times during several races a year, and Jimmie Johnson got it twice at Atlanta. They need to make it where you can only get it once. If you go another lap down after getting it once, too bad. Fix your car. If the first driver a lap down already got it once, then give it to the next one.

Well since the lucky dog came about due to DJ spinning and stopping on the track and he's retiring after Bristol how about we just return to racing your way back to the lead lap. That seemed fairer anyways. Some just didn't honor the "gentleman's agreement" but then isn't that just a reflection of life at large?

...the racing back to the flag was more a 'freebie' than the Lucky Dog... most lead cars were 'expected' to slow a bit to let guys back on the lead lap. It was when JG DIDN'T slow down and "give" a lap back that this rule came into effect. At least the lap-down cars have to fight for the one spot.

Well, it was brought up once before, it should be the first NON lead lap car behind the leader. since the 1st car 1 lap down tends to be half a lap behind the leader with cars 5 and 10 laps down between them.

I like the idea of getting rid of the lucky dog but still freeze the cars where they are when the caution comes up.

Freezing the field is a safety issue that i think needs to stay in place.

Then we would have two cars on the lead lap...

If there is no lucky dog, and the field freezes how does anyone get back on the lead lap?

I miss racing back to the yellow. I think it can still be done at some tracks and still be safe. (Dega, Daytona, The Glen, Inf, some of the 1.5 and 2 mile tracks. And a race should NEVER end under yellow, unless for rain.

He did'nt stop in the middle of the track he stalled out after he spun and could'nt roll out of the way of guys tryin to get on the lead lap and almost got t-boned. There's no gentleman's agreement anymore there's too much at stake u get rid of the lucky dog and it balls to the wall again when the yellow flies.
