Timing loops

Forgive my ignorance on this point, but why can't they use the equivalent of a speed gun--if the car exceeds X MPH, there will be a penalty? Timing loops have always seemed so archaic.

You have it backwards.

Another new rule? Hell why not have a valet drive the car down pit road, get service and bring the car back.?..
The linked article didn't mention any new rules, so why the angst?

''NASCAR hopes to implement the expanded system soon''
Ok, for the picker of nits they're looking into implementing new loops in the ststem to augment the existing rule.
Feel better?

They just need more timing loops so the drivers don't have the need to exploit the distance between them. NASCAR gives them a 5 mph buffer (which I think is silly) and they exploit that too.

Nascar is a constant struggle between the teams seeking to exploit loopholes and the officials seeking to close off the loopholes. It has always been this way. It's not a bad thing, IMO.

Back in the day, Nascar issued a rule prohibiting the fuel line from tank to carburetor being 120 feet long and 2 inches in diameter. I don't remember Smokey Yunick complaining on message boards about it.

What would they do instead?
Measuring it by distance over time is more complicated than it needs to be. They could easily create a system that measures a car's MPH all the way down pit road, rather than just doing it in sections.

Set a speed limit for the given track, and make the drivers stick to it. There would be no more exploiting the different loops, etc. The driver's already have their own system of calculating how fast they're going, so nothing would change on their end.

Maybe Stewart will whine about it, NASCAR will over react, the drivers' club will offer to pay the fine and a few crew chiefs'll get suspended, fined – whatever.

I don't think radar guns are any kind of answer for this. I don't know that the telemetry that is displayed from these cars is entirely accurate either. What is completely accurate is the equation of speed = distance / time. Sure, they can go over the pit road speed limit for a brief time after passing the last timing line before their pit box. That's because they then park in their pit box. If they want to keep these guys/gal from speeding on pit road, put a timing line in at the beginning of each pit box and the pit lane exit. Problem solved. They wouldn't be able to speed in to or out of their pit box.

The other option is to just leave things as they are so we all have something to talk about.

Personally, I like that they are able to do what they do now. Picking the pit position is part of racing. Picking a pit just before a timing line is an advantage earned by their qualifying position. I like that.

I think it was Gordon that gunned it right before his pit stall at Martinsville in the 2015 spring race and they nailed him cause they had a timing line right there lol. Whoops!

Seems everything has to be perfectly black or white today . We' ll be happier with the additional lines and rules no doubt. Or , maybe somebody's brain will explode.
