Tire Mixup Costs Labonte
Bobby Labonte's strong run in Saturday night's Nextel Cup race fell victim to an unusual tire problem. Labonte's Petty Enterprises team mixed up which tires to put in which position on the car, causing him difficulty in handling through the last segment of the Crown Royal 400 at Richmond International Raceway.

"On the last stop, the left rear tire got put on the right rear and the right rear got put on the left rear," he said. "That hasn't happened in about a hundred years. I was wrecking after that. I just had to hold on for 40 laps."

Labonte's team struggled to determine exactly what the problem was at that time. "We didn't know if it was a gear or [the] swaybar broke or what," he said after the race. "When the tires are mismatched like that, there's nothing you can do about it. We really didn't know about it until it was too late."

The issue dropped Labonte to 24th in the race and held him in his 27th points position. After the race, the 2000 Cup champion had some advice for his crew. "I told them, 'They're not going to give it to us. We're going to have to earn it,'" Labonte said.(Scene Daily)

Hint: Put on the round tires, not the square ones...

I wonder what his finish would have been if they had brought him back in and changed the tires.

Is there an opening on the crew? This is something some teams fire people over.

umm..dont the teams write "LR, RR, LF, RF" on the tires so they go on correctly? Or did somebody forget their lefts and rights?

Well if they went to a different # of lug nuts for each side this problem would never happen. Put 5 lugs on the right and 6 on the left.

then you'd prolly see somebody accidentally put the fronts in back..lol

I dont think that will help, because they would have to make a wheel from what i have seen there is no such thing as a 6 lug racing wheel. They would have to buy all new parts, and thats going to cost a whole lot of money, axles and front hubs are no where near cheep.

This happans every once in a while, so i dont see a need to change anything.

They do put RR, LR on the tires, but as fast as they do a pit stop they dont have time to read what is on there.

I guess an eazy fix would be to paint something on the wheel of one side and not the orther. say a white line, at 160 you would not be able to see it anyway, but durring a pit stop the guys could.

Well if you paint the whole wheel a diff color it might look funny, but it you cant see the right and left sides at the same time so that could work to.
