Closing laps of the Daytona 500. You are out in front on the restart looking for a victory in the Great American Race. Do you block? Do you not block? Is it okay to block? Is it not okay to block?

It's OK to block if you know how to do it without slowing (adding drag ) to your car.

Of course if Brad is behind you, make sure you don't cut him off. :)

Question #2 Under the same scenario as above, would you pull a move to crowd the guy below the yellow line
like Tony Stewart did? Would you pull a Carl Edwards knowing it is the rookie Brad below you??

:dual9mm:

No right or wrong or morality involved you take what you can while trying not to look flagrant. In other words if you can get away with it , do it.

It is the 500 and prestigious. Getting spun out is part of the risk but you also have 35 more races to make up for a DNF.

What if it is your last chance to make the final 4 ??????

Do you block? and if you do. do you get pissed when it doesn't work??

If you block, do it better than kybu tried it in the 2009 coke zero 400. It didn't work out so good. We were in the grandstand just below the camera.

Absolutely block with the understanding that its all or nothing at that point. If a driver gets a fender outside or inside then that's it - I wouldn't force them into the fence or the dirt.

what do you mean is it ok to block in the closing laps?? with plate racing you have to. There isn't a driver that would refuse to in the closing laps if it meant a possible win.

I am blocking. I am hanging my leg out of the window to trip the guy in second. I hanging Playboy pictures out of the back window to distract the guy in second (no Danica will not be in second). Everything I can do. Hell yes.

Brad wouldn't even have done that if NASCAR hadn't set the precedent the fall before that they'll penalize you even if you're forced below the line. They were begging for some 1955 Le Mans ish.

Yup, when a driver went below to avoid a crash with Tony, he paid a big price.
Brad actually asked Junior what to do in that case and Junior told him DON'T go below the line.

Carl didn't here that until after the race. :)

Go ahead and block if you want to, but don't get pissed if the guy you're blocking doesn't back off. It doesn't matter if it's the first lap or the last lap.

My $0.02

In general, I think drivers allow one move to protect a position and a second move will get you moved. But the drivers know that leading on a plate track you have to cover both lines. As a fan I don't like that but it is what has been working lately. Those in position to do something about it have to consider how their actions affect the field.

Any driver crowding another car toward the out-of-bounds line should be taboo; ever since that line was defined I've been expecting a car not to give which means a big one and that has happened.

I don't recall who it was but they had a run and got crowded below the line, the win was taken away. It was a no win situation, hold position and get wrecked or back off and get wrecked.

Honestly tho, why is that line necessary? What am I forgetting?

I think they made the line out of bounds because the banking transitions there and it can upset a car moving across it.

The move by Brad was brilliant he faked and out juked Edwards.
As much as I snark him, he can be brilliant, especially at Talladega

I think the leader has the right to choose his line, and it should be respected.
But when he is obviously zig zagging simply to allow no racing room, he is asking to get hooked.

I have never liked bump and runs just because it is the last lap. If he is running his line unaltered I think it should be respected. If he is using all of the track, simply to slam the door then he needs to be moved.

But it is a slippery slope. Even if two agree on paper to a certain drivers agreement, the actual interpretation would still be highly subjective and full of disputes.

sometimes...

Agreed and perfect example. But he has done brilliant things too. The move on Edwards in the Finch car, the move he dreamed about or said then put on Kyle at Talladega.
Racing JJ hard at Texas on old tires during the 2012 chase, the way he drove the one off deal in the trucks and caught Juniors eye.
The guy is brilliant and he can impress, along with the other idiotic moments.

Ain't nothing wrong with closing the door, don't let that damn horse out cause then you'll have to chase it down.

i think blocking is part of racing, don't really like it, but it proves you'll do what needed to get that win, which i do like.

Blocking and closing the door has always been a part of racing. There are certain drivers that will Chop or block you as long as they get away with it. Sometimes you have to hold your line to prove a point.

Blocking often is interpretated by the who rather than the what.
I dont have any driver or set of fans in mind.

I have seen it and done it myself since the 70s. A driver blocks and another moves him. And predictably the camps from both sides align with and support their driver.

Human nature at work I suppose.

Yep. You blocked me three times last year in the yahoo fantasy game. I'm a gonna dump your butt this year. :p

I am gonna do whatever it takes to win, if that includes blocking, so be it

Is blocking considered "cheating", if so how ridiculous can things get, it's racing goodness sake!!!!!!!!

Daytona may not be the greatest place to use as an example of block or no block. Blocking is part of racing so by all means block the hell out of em IMO

Blocking, yes, by all means necessary to win and outmaneuver an opponent.

Now, Getting forced below the double yellow line to avoid a wreck while on a run on the inside and gaining ground and then being penalized for it, bull****!

Pete......... I swear........ I love you dearly but...... your seething hate for Carl just makes me like him more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :booya:

Anyone knows the clip where Gordon gets spun out by Edwards at the Daytona 400 race? Looked but cant find it.

Gordon was either moving from the top lane to the bottom to block and got spun the hell out.

Blocking from another lane seldom works.
