Tony has the championship curse

Nowadays, seems like every driver has an off year or two after they win a championship. Tony's been having some crap luck out there this year.

And does it seem like he's in the media less and less? I hardly see or hear him interviewed. Is he just laying low? Because I hardly hear anybody refer to him as the reigning WC champion either.

Remember, Tony is always stronger the last half of the year. He is ahead of where he was last at this time.
As far as the media, well IMO they never give Tony the attention he deserves, but I think he is a big part of that reason, he hasn't always been great to them. When Gordon was the champ it did seem like every other sentence was about "the reining champ".

It is way to early to count Tony (one of if best drivers on the circuit) out.

I just now checked the standings and Tony is third. How is that bad luck?

He may not have a finish better than 5th, but I'm not counting Tony out by any means. Halfway through last year, he was 7th in points, and look where he ended up.

I really haven't noticed Tony having a bad year, after all he's doing great in the points!

Four top 10's in 6 races is hardly having a bad year. In my opinion.

WHOA NELLY!!!! HOLD ON!!!!! Wasn't bashing or SAYING HE WAS OUT OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

He just seems to have little crap going wrong. Hell I wouldn't count anybody in the top 30 out yet.

I think that DeeDee is right on the money with the media issue. Tony made it pretty clear that he did not care for any media attention and they rightfully are giving him very little. His sponsor pays the price for that but thats the risk they take.

Tony's season seems to be in pretty good shape thus far in my opinion. Last year I said the best thing for him in his efforts to win the championship was the probation that his sponsor initiated and it appeared as tho I was right after just a few races. That wake up call made Tony all the better and hopefully will last long enough for him to see continued success. He has not lost the "bad boy" reputation in my mind yet but I have always respected his abilities, even before the Busch days and I expect we will see a lot more of him since he did not keep his promise of "I'm gonna win their Championship and then I'm outta here" that he made in 2001.

I see your point of this thread Hatter. And Tony's year so far has been solid if unspectacular. He needs to get up there in the limelight and contend a little more.

[ Personally two drivers I never count out are Stewart and Gordon.]

Can't argue with that! :)

I think the media is "getting him back", so to speak, for his treatment of them - it happens to many athletes who make it clear they don't like the press...the press doesn't like them right back!

Be that as it may, he's having a good year and I don't think there's any major problems ahead.

Okay, would you qualify this as bad:

Stewart's Primary Car Disallowed and Impounded, has to go to a backup: #20-Tony Stewart was forced to pull his backup car from the hauler before Friday's Winston Cup practice after NASCAR disallowed his primary, claiming it failed the common body template inspection. The car, which had not yet been used by the team, was confiscated by NASCAR and its backup, another unused chassis according to Joe Gibbs Racing team manager Jimmy Makar, was pulled out of the transporter in its place. "I'm not sure we ever have done this," NASCAR president Mike Helton said. NASCAR impounded the car and planned to return it to its technical and research and development facility in Concord, N.C., to investigate it further.(NASCAR.com), no problems reported on the backup car.(XM Satellite- NASCAR Radio - Subscription Required)(3-28-2003)
