I wonder. How happy is Tony and Jeff with the current points system. I would think that Tony is unhappy and Jeff should be very happy. :)

Tony is leading Jeff Gordon by over 600 points and could continue to lead him by 500 to 600 points after 26 races, yet Jeff could very well end up winning the Championship. Tony continues to stretch his lead and Jeff continues to inch closer to the top 10. Then it becomes a new ballgame and anyone of the 10 could win.

So you assume that Tony is unhappy?
They all know at the beginning of the year that it's a new ballgame when the chase starts.

I doubt Tony is unhappy. It wouldn't do him any good if he is unhappy with the points system. He can't change it. I am sure he is a very happy camper right now. And i doubt he will be worried if Jeff makes it into the Chase. No offense to Jeff and his fans but that team right now can not put together 10 good races in a row.

The only sure thing if Jeffy wins the title this year will be watching the Gordon faithful squirm after claiming Busch was NOT the 'true' champion THIS year due to being behind Jeff until the 'chase' started last year.So...I guess that means Jeff wont 'really' be champ this year even if he outpoints Tony over the last ten races?

Irony. Who's a fan?

I am just an old racing fan but if the point system had not changed in 04, Gordon would have been champion thats different than the tone you are suggesting. I did not here too much whinning just a bunch of 'what ifs', you probably heard a lot more when he lost by 14 points or so to Terry in '96

This year the points system may work in his favor but that would be some poetic justice I guess. I imagine that when the last 10 races start the kid gloves will come off and nobody is going to find winning as easy as they may fiind it now.

I as a racer would be ticked if my tracks started some chase. This is UNFAIR to the teams, drivers, and fans. to have a "playoff" in racing.

And yes i still would not like it if Schrader, Robby, or Dave Blaney won....because it is unfair. you can just have ass it for 26 races, then full steam the last 10. race should be about giving it your all everyweek and look at the long run, not just "ok guys just try to get top 10's and 15's for the 1st few weeks, and then go in for the kill the last 10" i mean its just stupid......ok i'll shut up, Nascar has went down hill since Dale Earnhardt got killed. i have not seen much of an improvement at all......in fact i think the olny good thing has been in car driver safty...the "softer walls" still have some bugs...i have seen a softer wall do more damage to a car then what the reg wall would of done.....

LOL Lappy, .... I don't think the guys in 6th - 15th place in the points would agree with you that they've been halfassing it for the first 23 races so far.

Sure the softer walls "may" do more damage to the cars, ( and I'm not sure that is true) BUT it has caused less damage to the drivers and isn't that the real purpose?

I agree, :beerbang: If you are good at rolling craps then you can win a NASCAR championship now. You should at least be able to get more credit for winning races and be able to carry some bonus with you to the playoffs otherwise being 1st or 10th won't matter all year until the final 10.

Still rehashing the new points system I see. When will it end? :)

I love it and so will the new champ, whoever it will be.

I am all for driver safty, but i think they need to do something to the walls that if you just scrap them it will just flat spot that side of your car and not rip all the sheet metal off the side.

I still don't like the "chase". I still believe consistancy and driving ability should be the real test of the champion. How many total wins, top 5's, top 10's as compared to all the other drivers. Performance and consistancy should reign, not the lock it in and lay back for the last ten. All 36 races should be fought for and the results determine the ending standings.
I just don't like this goofy "chase"!!!!!!!!

With the system we have now, theoretically you could win the first 26 races and not be the champion!!

They need to even out the last 10 races with bonus points for the guys who have won races.

i may not like the chase.. but i think who wins is the champ, i mean its like complaining that home field advantage always wins the world series in baseball.. i say oh well, and just enjoy it..

Oh, man - that struck a chord! I guess you aren't a Cardinals fan. Back in '87 we had a better record than the Twins, but they had the home field advantage just because it was the AL's turn. I think that was the first time the home team won all 7 games. I just can't say Oh well and enjoy it any more. At least not in baseball! :)

I couldn't agree more....
