"If I had a billion dollars, I'd build me another daggone Bristol and put me 160,000 seats in it like Bruton did -- and laugh all the way to the bank. But they're not smart enough to do that."

In no way does that grammar convey intelligence.

As a self-proclaimed grammarian (if that itself is even a word) the only things he said that were grammatically incorrect were "daggone" and started a sentence with "but."

To add to that, as a professional grammarian and grammar teacher. Using the word "daggone" is just fine grammatically. He's using it as an adjective and although it is not a "proper english" word, that doesn't mean it's wrong. Also, it is more than okay to use the word "but" to start a sentence, especially in an informal setting. Of course, we have to take into consideration that Tony was saying this and not writing this. So the final decisions on periods and whatnot came from the person doing the writing. So, there is actually nothing wrong, grammatically, with this sentence. Good work, jee.
