Name the top 10 most skilled drivers in nascar

Then if you are into other auto series make another list of top 10 drivers actively driveing in all series.

talk about too much brain cells to burn this AM....but I will say this is a tough one..imho...up til say the early 90's drivers played a bigger role than the other 2 components(team,car)...but now these cars are so sensitive all the way around from chasis to aero, even the top drivers cant do much if the car is off just a little..here's my try...

stewart
j gordon
m martin
kenseth
Jr
busch
dj
blaney
rusty
b lab

thses are in no particular order and some others could easily be in here too...

I think its the other way around hooty, up until the equalization era, the car played the bigger role, the cars the allisons, cale, and petty had were years ahead of the rest of the field, now that everything is equal suddenly the good drivers really are not as good as they were. If we are talking skill over all series as a true driver....

Stewart
R Gordon
J Gordon
Filipaldi
B Said
R Fellows
K Schrader
D Blaney
K Busch
J Andretti

the most five skilled are

robby gordon
tony stewart
jeff gordon
dave blaney
ken schrader

i'll think of the other 5 when i get a chance

I have to remember to note that I often post without thinking back to the "petty days"..I usually think in the late 70's up to now....i think the allisons and cale were great drivers and made their stuff better...and i think petty's stuff made him better(not that I think Petty wasn't/isn't good for the sport because he was/is)....but I always think of Nascar in 3 periods.....the beginning years where the teams with the money and backing dominated, the middle period where drivers came into their own and could make a difference with what they drove and now the aero age where even the best struggle when their car is off a bit....my thinking could be way off...but I have to live with it cause thats all I got...

I agree with Hooty, not taking anything away from Richard Petty, the alot of times he outspent them rather than outrunning them. IMHO

Richard ran and won alot of great races, the only prob i have with some of his stats(and others did it too back then) is when he went to little track and ran against other who had no chance to win unless he wrecked or broke...but thats what happened in those times and Nascar allows those races in stats, but it does inflate his numbers a bit(not that they still wouldn't be impressive under a more uniform system and better compitition)... :)

Some very intersting names on some of those lists.

My NASCAR top 5 would be in no particular order

Jimmie Johnson
Toney Stewart
Jeff Gordon
Mark Martin
Matt kenseth

Top 10 in all active series besides NASCAR in no particular order

Micheal Schumacher
Chub Frank 1*
John Force
Gary StAmount(even with the trouble he is having this year.)
Micheal Andretti
Castronevas
Villanova ( I have no clue how to spell these last two names)
Sahra Fisher and the lady that drives for Rahal in the Toyota Alantic series, I believe her name Danica ???, get thrown in there becuase they are the two best female drivers out there.
Danny Lososki(sp)

Skilled........mmmm??The definition is open to interpretation, but still fun to speculate. All current guys:

Martin
Stewart
Busch
Biffle
Newman
Wallace
J.Gordon
R.Gordon
Rudd
Kenseth

Un-asked for,but given anyway :) are a few notes:the first four are Drivers with a capital 'D'...Ryan is a methodical and driven perfectionist that can absolutely set up his car better than most.Wallace is an old ASA guy(where most of the greats come from)J.Gordon has had the cars that were the ones to beat...and Evernham...that helped him more than skill,IMO.R.Gordon is this high because of his off road record mostly.Rudd has both skill and determination.Same with Matt.

Some other guys that are worth mentioning, either current or recent:

John Force for sure.
Tim Steele......Jeff Gordon -like numbers thru-out his career.
Nigel Mansell...a feel for a race car like few others.
Tommy Kendall....look at his record!
Kyle Busch....very young but very good.

And this isnt even counting the golden-era guys!!!

*In No order
1. Jeff Gordon
2. Tony Stewart
3. Dale Earnradt Jr.
4. Dale Jarrett
5. Mark Martin
6. Ryan Newman
7. Rusty Wallace
8. Bobby Labonte
9. Ward Burton
10. Matt Kenseth
10. Jeff Burton

Ok, so I have 11...thats hard to do though!

how do most of you judge skill

The biggest thing to me is someone able to run good in multiple series, and or tracks that are very diffrent. I really dont see how drivers like dale jr could be in the top 10 list, I havent seem him preform well on (MOST) tracks.

Tony Stewart -nascar and indy champion all that needs to be said

Jeff Gordon - the best car stuff is bull crap he dominated other series when he had crap for equipment.

Robby gordon -has preformed well in other series and provin he can do well on all types of tracks

Mark martin -has dominated other series, can preform well on all types of tracks. If he had better luck with cars when first coming into nascar he could be a champion now, but I guess thats how it goes. He has a good car now, and has had one for several years. Its time he won a cup

dale jarret

Rusty wallace

kurt busch

Bobby labonte

Future best skilled drivers
Ryan newman
Jimmie Johnson

By the way 97forever, manufactuer wouldnt be afecting your decision would it :p. Just never seen you put someone that wasnt in a ford in first.

Of course not Smack!!!That hurts! Besides, all the best drivers drive Fords! :p

Not a slam of Jeff G.,either.But show me a series WITHOUT Ray where he had as much success as WITH Ray.You can't.He was good--but not unbeatable--before Evernham. The cars have played a HUGE role in Jeff's 'skill' ranking. Not to say he isn't a very good driver, just compare AFTER Ray to with Ray and you have two very different drivers.Just my opinion, but no one can argue the very clear differences.

I admit without good equipment he wouldnt be where he is the same applies to anyone with a good amount of wins. The thing is he took that car and put great stats up. Alot of drivers could not do that, heck look at dale jr he has had a car just as good as jeff since he joined nascar, but compare the stats. It takes a great crew, great car, and a great driver to pull off that kind of stats.

Heck he cant be to bad, compare his stats and marks after ray left.
