1) He lost Fontana. In 11 races at Fontana since 2006, JJ has 4 wins and a 3.27 average finish.

2) Chicago. As far as JJ is concerned, NASCAR couldn't have picked a worse replacement for Fontana. In 5 races at Chicago since 2006, JJ has no wins and a 15.6 average finish.

3) HMS equiptment has lost a little dominance.

4) Kurt Busch. If JJ hits his car in the chase, Kurt will react the same way JJ did at Richmond. JJ set a bad example moving foward.

5) Boys have at it. EVERYONE will be racing JJ harder than ever.

6) Jeff Gordon is gone. The 24 had a lot to do with JJ's success, but Jeff decided to take his pearls of wisdom elsewhere.

7) Pit crew is a mess. OK, it's not a mess, but it isn't what it used to be.

8) That darn horseshoe is long gone and stinking like old Budweiser.

9) 1 win? Really?

10) It's time for a new champ, and I think JJ knows it. He sure has been out of character lately. Not so calm, cool and collected.

2) Johnson and Kenseth can't be champions at the same time.

The only reason you need to know why JJ will win Championship #6, Chad is on the Box.

It'll be interesting to see how Chad and Johnson will perform this time around. Last time they were able to pull off #5 at Homestead because Hamlin spun out early in the race. However, I doubt he'll have the same circumstances happen this time around.

Random or no specific order (not 10)

-Jimmie simply isn't as strong this year

-Last year they squeaked it out against a stronger car (in some ways I was more impressed with that one for the same reasons).

-More internal competition. Along with all of the field he has been the big dog at HMS for 5 years, but that is no longer the case.

-Jeff Gordon he has rejuvenated and seems focused. This year Jeff looks more like 5 time than 5t himself. More speed this year and a proven history when stakes are high. Jeff has never looked better in the COT era.

-Jimmie has more non value added drama this year, that almost has exclusive negatives. With the exception of the Homestead weekend in racing you disservice yourself trying to beat one guy, you have to beat 42. The mental game can be introverted too, that is trying to out do your own previous highs, I see less of that strength in JJ this year. Just like last year this is more meaningful then ever, the speed advantage has deteriorated and reduced the tolerances in being mentally focused imo. He could make an un JJ like error this time.

-Kurt Busch will run one psycho race against him. JJ will be on his mental game in the chase but once Kurt eliminates his own chase chances, going after JJ will be the mission. Those vendettas almost always destroy a chase run, if a guy wants to get you, the track just isn't big enough to avoid him for 500 miles.
This JJs biggest chase danger imo.

-Kyle B, and Harvick are better suited for chase runs than ever.
Kyle is more mature this year, big picture oriented now. I am happy for him, Samantha seems to be turning the wild wily young cowboy into a mature racer. A deadly force in keeping the speed while adding in seasoned maturity.
The cross Harvick vendetta is his biggest danger imo.
I believe Kyle can set that aside, I am less sure of Harvick.

But Harvick is better than before this year too. Kevin has figured out how to win a few now that he wasn't really fast enough to win, either him or the CC are better race managers now. The 29 team has this belief now too, if they can get the 2010 consistency back they will be dangerous. Kevin just needs to forget a Kyle feud and race the whole field the whole race.

-The Brad K juggernaut. He has the momentum peak, if they keep it nothing else matters.

Does anyones else feel that having Fontana replace with Chicago is significant?

By finishing average, that's a 12 point swing. If you consider a win at Fontana, and 4W's in 11 tries, it could chop 17 or 18 points off of JJ's chase total.

Theres no denying the 48 is strong at Fontana, and of course Harvick won the 1st 2 at Chicago, but hasn't done much there since 2002.

Sure there will be some sort of advantage/disadvantage to being in Chicago, instead of Cali, namely the possibility of rain cutting a race short at Chi.

If the chase were 10 road courses, the champ would be Ambrose....so yeah, different tracks make a difference, how much of a diff is the question.

Hell, even Jr has wins at 7 of the 10 chase races.........
Could be anyones chase. I'd like to see Newman win it.
MoMike

He won't need them if he can keep it up!

True, but still....

I'm still hoping he steps out of the NW ride for the rest of the year. He says it makes him better, but that's kind of a retarded thing to say after running 1, 2, 3 and 1. How much better does it get?

The reason Jimmie-Chad won't win 6 in a row?

Because it's impossible to win even FIVE in a row!

Oh, wait a second... :p

I definitely remember the "Jimmie Johnson's season of despair" thread.

Thanks for remembering! I created that thread as a joke simply because of Jimmie's bad finish in the Daytona @ the time. People were all concerned that his 35th place finish was his demise that season. Some people got the joke, some didn't.

What I find funny now is reading all of the posts about how Jimmie Johnson has lost it again. That he's not running well. Blah, blah, blah. Man, I really hate trying to defend this guy but he only finished 3 points behind Kyle after the first 26 races. I can only wish my driver has had such a dismal season.

Kevin Harvick returns to the rankings after winning Saturday's Wonderful Pistachios 400 at Richmond International Raceway.

1. Jeff Gordon: Had a car set up for longer runs and the late-race caution took his chance at running down Kevin Harvick for the win at Richmond. Enters the Chase with his best chance at winning a championship since he was in the Hendrick three-driver battle for the title back in 2009.

Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 98.9
Point Standing: Third
Last Week's Ranking: First

2. Carl Edwards: Was saved by the late-race caution flag in Richmond or the decision by crew chief Bob Osborne not to pit for tires earlier would have been a disaster. Nearly ran down Harvick but settled for second and appears to have found whatever went missing in the late-summer stretch.

Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 99.4
Point Standing: Fifth
Last Week's Ranking: Fifth

3. Jimmie Johnson: There’s no reason to doubt Johnson being a contender for a sixth-straight championship. Nobody plays the Chase game better than Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus. But the feud with Kurt Busch bears watching and could be a major fly in the 48 team’s title ointment.

Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 98.7
Point Standing: Sixth
Last Week's Ranking: Second

4. Kyle Busch: Has done a masterful job of staying out of confrontations, at least on the Sprint Cup side this year, and that could bode well for his quest for a championship. Turned in a nice rebound performance from early-race issues to come out of Richmond with a sixth-place finish.

Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 108.4
Point Standing: First
Last Week's Ranking: Sixth

5. Matt Kenseth: Was strong at Richmond until getting caught up in a tangle that badly damaged the Roush Fenway Racing Ford. Look for Kenseth to do what he’s built a career on during this Chase, knock down consistent finishes and stay in the title hunt until the end of the line.

Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 95.4
Point Standing: Fourth
Last Week's Ranking: Fourth

6. Kevin Harvick: Something clicked with the No. 29 back at Bristol that has resulted in Harvick once again being the force he was earlier in the season when he won three races. Was a powerhouse at Richmond, leading more than half the laps and appears more than ready to compete for the championship as he did in last year’s Chase.

Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 91.9
Point Standing: Second
Last Week's Ranking: N/R

7. Kurt Busch: For a guy who wound up finishing fifth Saturday night, Busch was not the happiest camper after the race. His rivalry with Johnson will be a major challenge for Busch to try and win a second Sprint Cup Series title as will keeping his emotions in check for the next 10 races.

Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 97.0
Point Standing: Seventh
Last Week's Ranking: Seventh

8. Brad Keselowski: Slipped a little from his tremendous charge of recent weeks with a 12th-place finish in Richmond on a night that was loaded with issues. Loves wearing the underdog label and a fast start to the Chase with a good performance in Chicago will make another statement that the Blue Deuce team is not going away anytime soon.

Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 86.6
Point Standing: 11th
Last Week's Ranking: Third

9. Tony Stewart: Did exactly what he needed to do Saturday night with a top-10 run in Richmond to lock down his Chase spot. Needs to find a way to stay as consistent as he’s been the last two weeks or else risks being a non-factor in the championship in short order.

Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 89.3
Point Standing: Ninth
Last Week's Ranking: Ninth

10. Denny Hamlin: A Saturday night at his home track that was a lot more unpredictable than Hamlin and company would have liked, but they got the job done despite getting involved in the early race multi-car accident and making several trips to pit road for repairs and adjustments during the course of the race. Has a long way to go in the standings to repeat his just short championship performance of 2010.

Season-to-Date Driver Rating: 91.7
Point Standing: 12th
Last Week's Ranking: 10th

From media interviews going on now.....

Kyle Busch on how to beat JJ: "I mean, no one's tried locking the dumbass in a port-o-john yet. I mean that in the kindest way possible."

lol That's pretty funny. They could call it the "Jimmie was pooping" championship.

Yes, some of their quotes were pretty good today.

By the way, 5 time sounded pretty relaxed today. Look out fellow #48 non-fans like myself.

Yeah, this is about the time of year when Chadski opens up the Back Door...

...if ya get my meaning, if ya catch my drift...

Hmmm I'm not sure I do butt I have heard rumors of secret doorways leading to secret workrooms and storage areas in the Hendricks shops.....rumor is that's where they keep the "Good Stuff"

WheW! I'm glad that's all it is. lol

This is when teams usually roll out the tweaks to parts they never sent for approval because they are just tweaks. Gibbs oil pans and Chads extra heavy drive shaft shield come to mind. I think NASCAR put an end to that, or was that new order to submit tweaks beforehand only for the past 2 races?
