I saw the title, and thought this was going to be about something else.

Bait & Switch.

:(

If you've never been to a topless late model race, you're missing out. Seeing these bad-ass sleds hit the track with no roof (hence the title), and being able to see the drivers work is just really, really great to see.

Yeah, I had seen an occasional topless night on the local dirt track schedules for years, and only made it to my first one a few years ago. I did in fact guess it was something to do with the cars, although I didn't know exactly what to expect. :)

Here, this link should work. This is a topless dirt sportsman such as one would see in my neck of the woods (NY and Ontario):

I dig those northern, big block modifieds. Wish they had them a little closer.

That's actually a Sportsman, and what we call 358 Big Block Modifieds are the same cars with bigger wheels and different carburetor's (from what I'm told). Either way, both of these classes kick ass, and the modifieds will average about 105-110 MPH laps on a 1/2 mile track.

A couple of the tracks around here (not many) have what they call 360 Late Models that look very similar to the photo you posted. The regional differences in dirt racing are quite confusing. Hey, at least we all have Street Stocks. At least that's what we call them. :D

Don't head south then, ya never know what they'll be called, or what they'll look like. Street stock, pure stock, bomber, on and on and on. There's no uniformity between tracks and classes, especially when it comes to the lower classes.

Oh, I hear you there. I believe there's a 4 track "street stock" challenge coming up at a track around here with their rules. But despite the slighty different rules, "Street Stocks" around here are all 8 cylinders, and probably 80% Monte Carlo's and 20% Camaro's. (Many are probably other GM products, but you get the point). And the 4 cylinder "Mini Stocks" are probably 90% Mustangs. I know one guy kicks butt in the 4 cylinder class at a Canadian track with a VW Golf.
