The tornadoes are by us, and nothing hit us, but a town close to us, was hit pretty badly. I am still not for sure If Kansas Speedway was damaged. I do know that the tornado was right around the area of the speedway though.
The speedway was fine. An F3 possibly F4 tornado did touch down a few miles to the north of the speedway. Some of the footage I have seen puts it extremely close to the speedway but it only suffered from some of the nearby flying debris. So far 1 confirmed death in the Kansas City area. Some of the footage of the destruction is unbelievable folks. Click on THIS to get an idea of what the destruction was like. My heart goes out to those that were affected. For those in the Kansas City area they have set up a Red Cross/Salvation Army trailor at the Speedway to accept items for donation to help those in need.
Destrction left by tornado's are unbelievable, sometimes pictures don't tell the true story. Last year on this date, we had a killer tornado sweep through a small town. I remember when I was helping out the Red Cross, standing in areas of debris upto my knees. There were several blocks of what used to be homes and neighborhoods of nothing but knee-level debris. The town felt lucky despite, the loss of 2 of its citizens and probably a 10th of its home because the larger f4-f5 lifted before reaching the town and dropped the smaller f2. The first one had the ability to wipe out the whole town. Its at times like that, you realize, the minor problems of your life or nothing.
Five years ago an f5 tornado hit about 15 miles from here in McDonalds Chapel Al.A pretty densley populated area...tornado alley.
The sheer destruction from the strom was so incredible it is hard to describe.I have literally seen parts of Baghdad during the Gulf War that were bombed for days and days that were not as destroyed as that town was.You are excactly right txracingdiva. We picked up parts of houses in our yard from 40 miles away....cars,farm animals, you name it.That storm wiped out most of the town, killed dozen's and STILL the debris is everywhere around there.President Clinton flew down to view the damage...just horrible.
My advise to anyone reading this is to take these things seriously. We have 'storm pits' down here.I will be heading to ours shortly in fact.Very bad weather here today.
