Earnhardt, who drove in eight races and finished 17th in the Grand National Division West Series while also participating in Nextel Cup and Busch series races this season, was extended the invite after two of the top 15 drivers were unable to attend.
At the Showdown, the top 10 Southwest Series drivers will face off against the top 10 drivers from the other three series (Midwest, Northwest and Southeast) that comprise the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division.
Leading the charge is 2004 Southwest Series champion Jim Pettit II, of Prunedale, Calif. Pettit earned an invitation to the inaugural 2003 Toyota All-Star Showdown by finishing third in the Southwest Series standings. Pettit finished second to Elite Division race winner Ron Breese Jr., from the Midwest Series, in the main event.
This week, Pettit returns as a NASCAR touring series champion and he's headed to Irwindale with a lot to prove.
"We were so close last year, we feel the only place we can go is forward," said Pettit. "That would only make the event more satisfying for us. If the season keeps going the way we hope it does, with a championship, winning the Toyota All-Star Showdown would be the icing on the cake. It's really important to us."
On Wednesday evening, Irwindale Speedway will host the second annual NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown Street Festival on the grounds of the speedway.
A highlight of this fan-friendly event, which also includes games, music, food, driver autograph sessions and interactive sponsor displays, is the Impact Racing Pit Crew Challenge, in which the top three NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series teams take on the top three West Series teams in a tire changing/pit stop contest against the clock.
The team with the fastest pit stop times wins a package of Impact Racing gear valued at $1,500. The Toyota All-Star Showdown Street Festival will take place from 5-9 p.m. Admission is free.
The Toyota All-Star Showdown begins Thursday with a full day of practice.
On Friday night, each division (AutoZone Elite Division and NASCAR Grand National Division) will hold twin 50-lap preliminary races. The results of those races will establish the starting lineups for Saturday's feature races, with the 50-lap race winners starting up front in the main events.
On Saturday, the AutoZone Elite Division all-star field will race for 125 laps, followed by the NASCAR Grand National Division all-stars (from the Busch North Series and West Series) in a 150-lap showdown.
Friday's and Saturday's events will be telecast live on SPEED Channel.
