This year, I'll be making first time visits to: North Wilkesboro, Martinsville, Shenandoah Speedway, and I'm thinking about Motor Mile Speedway and Pocono Raceway. I'm also willing to take MAGICMILLER up on his offer to go to New Hampshire:growl:

Shenandoah Speedway, and I'm thinking about Motor Mile Speedway

Really wanted to go to Shenandoah back when they had Hooters Pro Cup. If you go to Motor Mile make sure you bring a lawn chair, they dont have normal grandstands.

Shenandoah has Pro Cup this year... week before the 150 at Manassas I think.

I get press passes, don't sit in the stands. I'm either in the pits or in the tower.

I have no idea when the 150 at Manassas is. Anyway, I didnt remember that Shenandoah has pro cup back this year but its not the same as it was before anyway. Not worth the trip for pro cup anymore.

Virginia Motor Speedway is one beautiful facility. Better than most asphalt tracks. I've been to Potomac and Hagerstown but people who go to all the dirt races tell me VMS is the Charlotte Motor Speedway of dirt tracks.

Rockingham is easily the nicest track I've been to. VMS, Langley, SoBo and NJMP are also really nice.

ODS at Manassas, well, I've been doing some stuff there to make it remotely possible to do live coverage.

Season tickets to Bristol, Dover, and Martinsville. Ex season ticket holder to Richmond. Been to Charlotte, Michigan, Pocono, Watkins Glen. Next on my list is to make it to, Darlington. I camp @ each one of them. Rookies tailgate.

Martinsville: cup and truck twice
Bristol: cup once
Atlanta: cup once
Talladega: cup, nationwide, ARCA, trucks too many times to count

1950 Funk's Speedway. Winchester IN. (My first NASCAR race but, to be honest, I don't remember a lot of details about it as I was only niine years old)
1958 Daytona Beach & Road Race
1963 Daytona 500 and Sportsman
1965 Manassas VA
1965 Bristol TN
1966 Brsitol TN
1966 Marysville TN
1967 Bristol TN
1968 Richmond VA
1969 Darlington SC
1973 Riverside CA
1976 Daytona and Sportsman
1977 Daytona Firecracker
1986 Darlington
1986 Martinsville
1987 Martinsville
1988 Martinsville
1994 Indianapolis BY400 and BGN at IRP
1996 Talladega
1997 Daytona
1997 Talladega
1999 Daytona

I think I have them all but I might have some of the years off by one?
The large breaks in years can be explained by Uncle Sam's Canoe Club keeping otherwise occupied.

Thanks to the Navy and having a job which kept me on the road I've been able to enjoy a lot of really good local racing. A few of these have been
Alabama: Mobile International Speedway, Sunny South Raceway and Flomaton Raceway
Indiana: Sun Valley (now Anderson) Speedway, Armscamp Speedway, Muncie Raceway, Art Zipp's Speedrome, 16th St Speedway, Salem Speedway, Bloomington Raceway, Wabash Co. Fairgrounds, Beir Field Speedway
Ohio: Lima Speedway, Columbus Raceway, Eldora Speedway, Kil-Kare Speedway
California: Capital Speedway in Sacramento, Vallejo Speedway, Altamont, Calistoga Speedway
Florida: JAX Speedway (both old and new), Five Flags Speedway
Virginia: Franklin County Speedway, Langley Speedway. South Boston
MIsc: Thunder Road - Vermont, Stafford Speedway - Connecticut, Louisville Fairgrounds - Kentucky, Texarkana Speedway (calling this one a race track is kind of a stretch!) - Arkansas, West Virginia Speedway - W. Virginia, Atomic Speedway - TN and a track near Joplin MO but I can't recall its name.

That's all I can think of; my brain is fried!

Some of these, like Armscamp, Capital and both JAX tracks are sadly gone. Some, like Bristol, have radically changed (not necessarily for the better) since I have been there.

John Galt, you should come up to Manassas in July for the YFT150.

Old Dominion is having a huge resurgence. They had higher car counts than every other track in the region... I hope they sell out races and Britt doesn't close it. It's a dumpy little track compared to the others in the region but the racing is great.

The dirt track at Charlotte Motor Speedway is just as nice, if not nicer, than Virginia Motor Speedway. I've also heard really good things about Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO.

You should get up to Manassas as well.

May 14th and July 23rd are good dates. They have an open wheel mod race in August as well.

This is a hard one for this old man to remember. The first race I ever attended was in my old home town in northwest Oklahoma way back in the very early 50's. No one would have heard of it but it was the Woods County race track. Okay, here is what I can remember.

Grand Forks, ND race track
East Moline, IL race track
Davenport, IA fairgrounds
West Liberty, IA
Dubuque, IA
Farley Raceway, IA
Milwaukee Mile
Martinsville
North Wilkesboro
Bristol
Daytona
Atlanta
Richmond
Charlotte
South Boston
Motor Mile
Caraway
Concord Motor Speedway
Myrtle Beach
Friendship Speedway
Bowman Gray Stadium (racing starts this weekend at the Madhouse!)

I probably missed one or two, but those are all I can think of for now. Several of those tracks I've been many times.

Dates I can't recall but tracks are something else and I know I'll miss a few.
These are tracks other than Sprint, Nationwide or truck venues.

New Jersey:
McAfee; Harmony; Old Bridge; Wall Stadium; Pine Brook; Sorrento (Morristown); Trenton; Flemington;

None of these are locations where attended when taking my son motocross racing.

Rolling Thunder mods? I am gonna try and get up there this year, at least for the VSS

Yes, RTM on August 27th.

May 14th -- Tornados 100 presented by On The Run, Virginia Sprint Series 25 lap event, 30 lap legends, 20 lap UCAR, 30 lap Virginia Mini Cup Association.

No excuses. :D

The Sprints also race on July 23rd and I strongly recommend going to that one.

It's a bit of a drive for you, Andy but may I success the first week of december you head down here where the weather is still tolerable and catch the Snowball Derby over at Five Flags in Pensacola? There is good racing all weekend and the Snowball has a field of some of the best money drivers from all over the East Coast, South and Midwest, usually with a couple of NA__AR drivers thrown in. It might get kind of chilly that time of year (maybe down in the 50°'s) but it's worth the trip!

I fully intend on getting down there for the Derby, not sure when it will be though.

Phoenix International Raceway 1995 - present (Cup, Trucks, NASCAR West series, and Copper Classic) actually drove personal vehicle on track in 2009 (only year they did this that I know of)

Manzanita Speedway circa 1977 - 2009 (bought out by a crane company ) (World of Owtlaws, CRA sprints, USAC sprint and midgets, ASCA sprints, AMRA midgets, late models, stocks, others)

Canyon Speedway 1998 - present (ASCA sprints and AMRA midgets)

downtown Phoenix in mid 90's (Formula 1)

My first and probably still favorite track was the original paved 3/8 mile San Jose Speedway out on East Tully Road. It was NASCAR sanctioned and promoted by the legendary Bob Barkheimer. They ran modifieds known as Hardtops - here's my boyhood hero Marshall Sargent with a typical 1960-era car.

My family were regulars for a dozen or more years every Saturday night. We'd also make a trip to Fresno's Kearny Bowl a couple times a year where the series ran on Friday nights. By the time I left for the service the cars had changed quite a bit-

gpa2.gif

They tried running full-bodied late model stock cars there a few times but it never really caught on.

Since then I've visited the old Manzanita Speedway outside Phoenix when I was stationed nearby in the Air Force, Stockton 99 Speedway, Lakeport Speedway, seen five 'Cup races at Sonoma and a Winston West race at the Shasta County Fairgrounds, and ran a hobby car at Silver Dollar Speedway in my hometown with occasional trailering to Marysville, Chester, Orland and Antioch.

Santa Fe Speedway..Willow Springs,IL..First NASCAR race there was in 1954..No I was'nt there for that one. It was a Winston Racing Series track from 1987 till 1995. I did see Tony Stewart win the last sprint car race there in 95..Track closed in 1996. It's a townhouse complex now. Google earth shows the actual (former) track oval that was incorporated into the design of the roadway inside the complex.

Chicago Motor Speedway..Cicero,IL Saw the 2 truck races held there in 2000 & 2001..Track closed in 2002. It has been demolished and is being developed into a shopping center and festival park

Chicagoland Speedway..Joliet,IL..Was there for the inaguaral Tropicana 400 in 2001..It was 95* that day and our seats were in row 64 (1 row down from the top) Wife said never again

If you were going to the races in 1954, did you ever go to Raceway Park in Blue Island, Soldiers Field or O'Hare Stadium? If you were in Melrose Park, O'Hare was probably your closest track, if I remember my Cook Co. geography. They were still running all three places in 1961 when I was stationed at Glenview. I never cared for Soldiers Field but loved O'Hare and Raceway. The bar at O'Hare was a kicking place, especially after the main feature was run. Another good Chicago area track was Illiana, over in Sherervile. Flat and kind of a miniture Milwaukee.

I think Sal Travela won the last race at Soldiers Field around...? 1963? I think I read where Bud Koehler was still running when Raceway finally got shut down? Santa Fe was a good track but I never got to it them run the ½-mile version. Every race I ever attended there was on the ¼-mile.

Ah, Tully road. If I remember, didn't that place have a covered grandstand? It's been so long. I grew up with the hardtops, but on dirt instead of asphalt. Old 37 coupes.

I was born in 59, so I was'nt at that race. My father raced at O'Hare circa 55-59. I have been to Raceway Park back in the 70's. I knew Sal Tovello and his brother when they were still in the used car biz as late as 1999-2000 in Bensenville,IL. My bud....The "Elmhurst Express"..Fast Freddie Lorenzen is now in a nursing home with dementia and other health issues. Say a prayer..Last I heard it was'nt looking good. I spent more time at Santa Fe on wednesday nights for the AMA Grand Nat'l bike races. Every big name racer was there then, the purses were very good for a mid-week race.

The roof covered the top 15 or so rows. It was cool to sit on the top row and get the full echo effect of the flathead's roar. Around 1965 they put up some bleachers on the back stretch. My brother and I were walking along the south turn path between the two grandstands one night during qualifying when we heard a loud bang from the other side of the berm followed by the bottom half of a connecting rod plopping onto the ground right in front of us. They closed the path to foot traffic while cars were on the track not long after that.

Sadly the site now lies under East San Jose urban sprawl although the quaint Reed Hillview airport adjecent to the speedway somehow survived.
