Does anyone know where the transponders are located on the cars these days? When NASCAR first started using them, they were on the back on the cars. I haven't heard any changes to the location since then.

I ask the question in the case of yesterday's photo finish. If the transponders are located in the back of each car, it is possible the leading each of both cars crossed the finish line at the exact same time and Johnson's momentum allowed his transponder to cross the line before Bowyer's did. Think about it, the difference of .002 seconds could make that possible. Unfortunately, the video is not clear enough to show it and I have seen no photo evidence to support this. You'd have to be lucky to nail it at the precise moment no matter how many frames per second your camera is set at.

I'm not sure but in that picture it looks like JJ's wheel has hit the yellow line going across the track that I assume is where the race ends while Bowyers is just about to touch

Good point. I remember some time back hearing the transponder was near the fuel cell in the back of the car. That is not the only criteria they use to award the win though.

Wow, I wonder why Mark Martin wasn't pushing Gordon when the 8 car pack crossed the finish line, I'm just now realizing this.

I know him and JR actually made contact in the trioval that might have broken the 2 apart.

Isn't the transponder the small bump in front of the numbers on the roof?

That's the roof cam.

Yup, roof cam. The next thing you know the teams will be piping streaming feeds in from the roof cam so the pushers can see over the car in front of them. :D

Check out cousin Carl and the Biff on the outside in the pic above. It was a dang awesome race.

Junior slam-sided mark when they came up off the yellow line.

AFAIK, transponder is still in trunk, but they validate via camera.

I thought the transponders where near the B pillar right behind the drivers seat. Ive been known to be wrong though lol.

I knew it was on the right frame rail behind the wheel, near the tank. I thought it was to be located X number of inches off the read axle center line but,,,

"All Nextel Cup cars must carry the transponder mounted on the right-rear of the fuel cell, exactly 13.6 feet back from the frontmost part of the car, and this position is verified at tech."

So the idea is that the car which nearly, almost completely crosses the finish line wins?

So you don't win by a nose...you win by a tail.

As long it's the same for everyone, I guess.
