From Marty Smith's FB page --- the statement from Roush/Fenway:

Roush Fenway announces @TBayne21 diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Bayne/Roush comments ->

Daytona 500 winner and Roush Fenway Racing (RFR) driver Trevor Bayne has announced today that he has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Bayne - 22 years old - has undergone extensive testing at the Mayo Clinic and has been cleared by doctors and NASCAR to compete behind the wheel.

“I’ve never been more driven to compete,” said Bayne. “My goals are the same as they’ve been since I started racing. I want to compete at the highest level and I want to win races and championships. I am in the best shape I’ve ever been in and I feel good,” added Bayne. “There are currently no symptoms and I’m committed to continuing to take the best care of my body as possible. I will continue to trust in God daily and know that His plan for me is what is best.

“As for now, I want to close out the season strong this weekend at Homestead and then shift my focus on getting ready to compete for the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Championship in 2014. I have a great team, a great family and great people all around me. I have been truly blessed in life and I look forward to what my future holds.”

In 2011, Bayne became the youngest driver in NASCAR history to win the famed Daytona 500. He is currently sixth in the NNS standings, having accumulated one win, six top-five and 20 top-10 finishes in 2013. He will compete again full-time for the NNS championship in 2014, driving the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford Mustang.

“We are 100 percent supportive of Trevor and his ability to compete in a race car,” said Roush Fenway team owner Jack Roush. “I have full confidence in Trevor and his partners have all expressed that same confidence and support. As with all of our drivers, we look forward to standing behind Trevor and providing him with all of the tools he needs as he continues to develop in his young career.”

I have a friend who has lived with MS for years and I had no idea he was even sick.. it doesn't have to be a terrible thing. At least not now. It sucks though and I feel for him. Glad he can still drive.

That's too bad. Some friends and myself were talking about MS last evening - as we all know different people who have it - and what can be done for those suffering. I'll leave it at that before it gets political.

Good luck to Trevor Bayne.

Such sad news for me to wake up to. Feel so bad for him and hope his case is as mild as possible.

I wish him well and hope he can continue to race.

Bayne had undiagnosed medical issues after winning the Daytona 500. Now the illness is confirmed as multiple sclerosis and he can go on. At least it is no longer a mystery and that's gotta count for something.
Best wishes go out to Trevor Bayne along with hope for much success in his NASCAR career.

Hope the best for him, he seems to be a great guy, and I hope his career can continue on.

The severity of MS is highly variable from person to person. And we don't really know why that is, or how to turn a severe case into a mild case. It appears to be largely a matter of luck. So one person can lead a mostly normal life, while another is nearly crippled by the disease.

It's unfortunate that Bayne has MS, but luckily for him it appears to be a fairly mild case. That can, of course, change over the course of a lifetime.

As the article mentioned, if Bayne wasn't a wealthy, high profile athlete he most likely would not have been diagnosed until much later in life. Odd episodes of headaches or vision problems would have just been written off as migraine headaches or a bug bite or weird flu variant.

In that sense, Bayne is lucky to have learned his diagnosis so young and can perhaps take steps to slow the progression of the disease with diet and medication.

Wow didnt see this coming. Really feel for him, this kinda stuff cant be fun. Trevor Bayne has had so much bad luck.

Shame Trevor is a great kid. Hopefully he can continue his career and improve next season
Hey, welcome to the forums. I have a slight hunch that you are a...biffle fan? ;)

Trevor is a very nice person who didnt deserve to get MS. Wonder how this will affect his future?

Sad news, indeed.
One of my co-workers has MS. She had some joint pain, went to the doc and was diagnosed with MS. It's been a little more than a year now and she walks with a cane and she is getting noticeably worse. As I understand, MS doesn't affect everyone the same way. Some people are more resistant to its debilitating symptoms. I hope that Trevor gets all care and treatment available.
