Trio of teams fined $25,000, points taken

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Three NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams – Dale Earnhardt, Inc., Morgan-McClure Motorsports and Petty Enterprises -- received monetary fines and forfeited championship driver and owner points for rules infractions that occurred during last week's Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway, NASCAR officials announced today.

The No. 15 DEI Chevrolet was found to have an unapproved carburetor modification during opening-day inspection.

The result was a $25,000 fine for crew chief Richard Labbe, the loss of 25 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship driver points for Michael Waltrip and the loss of 25 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship owner points for Teresa Earnhardt.

The #4 team was penalized the same for the fuel cell violation.
The #45 team was penalized the same for unapproved jacking bolts.

Cup teams lose money, points

NASCAR on Wednesday fined three teams $25,000 each and docked driver and owner points for various infractions found last week at Daytona International Speedway.

Michael Waltrip lost 25 driver points, car owner Teresa Earnhardt lost 25 owner points and crew chief Richard "Slugger" Labbe was fined $25,000 for unapproved carburetor modifications. Labbe was fined an addition $500 for an unapproved roof strip.


"NASCAR didn’t like what they saw on that particular carburetor and took it during inspection on Friday morning. We all have to abide by their rules and accept our penalty. All we can focus on from this point is moving ahead," said No. 15 chief Richard "Slugger" Labbe.

Waltrip is currently fifth in the Winston Cup points standings. The penalty drops him 417 points behind series leader Matt Kenseth.


The No. 4 Morgan-McClure Motorsports Pontiac was penalized for having an unapproved fuel cell container modification that was found by NASCAR officials during pre-race inspection. Crew chief Chris Carrier was fined $25,000, Stacy Compton forfeited 25 championship driver points and Larry McClure forfeited 25 championship owner points for the infraction.


The No. 45 Petty Enterprises Dodge was found to have unapproved rear jacking bolts. Crew chief Steven Lane was issued a $25,000 fine while Kyle Petty forfeited 25 championship driver points and Pattie Petty forfeited 25 championship owner points.

Im really surprised about that. I really didnt think that they were going to take some points. I figured a fine or a suspension or slugger. Oh well...
