Looks like they're getting serious about going to school in Houston. A new program called ZAP is dragging parents into court if their children don't do their homework. They could be socked with a $185 fine. Needless to say, some parents are really pissed. Question is, who are they pissed at? The school system or their kids. My guess is the system.

i dont think kids should be sent home with bunches of homework, they should do schoolwork in school. jmo. now if they fine the parents for children not attending school, that is ok.

Oh, yes. That's the district I live in. The ZAP program has been in place for several years. The citations are the next step in getting kids and their parents involved in education.

You read where the parents complained that they didn't know their kids had zeros, etc. Wrong! The district mails out progress reports or report cards every 3 weeks. If the parent didn't know it's because they didn't pay attention.

And yes, the parents blame the system, not the kid who's sitting in class vegetating.

TRL, playing devil's advocate here: Couldn't the kids be getting the mail BEFORE the parents see it?

I don't believe that the parents should be blaming the system that is supposed to be teaching the kids. If they were paying attention to their children, inquiring about homework, classwork and grades, then they might be a little more up on their kids grade situation. The school district here in Burleson sends out progress reports every 3 weeks, and the teachers send the parents an email informing them that progress reports have been sent home with students. Ours have to be signed and sent back to the teacher.

A lot of parents look at school as a babysitter, and not a place of education.I agree with the system that you speak of.In Ohio a Student who is failing cannot get a drivers lic. Also if a parent is behind on child support they lose there drivers lic.

pbunch, the state has changed the way teens get drivers licenses here in the state of TX. It used to be when you turned 16 you got a drivers license and could drive whenever/wherever. Now, it is being called a step-license. You are only allowed to drive between 6am and 9pm, submit your grades to be able to keep your license, and many more stipulations for that drivers license. Now they are making the kids understand that it is a priviledge NOT a right to have a drivers license.

majestyx, I'm sure the kids are getting to the mail first. The district sends out newsletters quite frequently about when reports and report cards are mailed home.

If I was a parent and never saw a report card, I would sure call the school to find out why.

I always required report cards and progress reports to be signed and returned, but the penalty for not doing so was limited by the district. I always called parents, but sometimes just couldn't get to everyone.

I'm all for limiting the drivers license privilege.

My son is an 8th grader. I am glad you are still "reasonably" sane (as you put it) because I know what he put his teachers through last year. The beginning of puberty for the young people these days is almost unbearable, and it's onset is usually in the 7th grade. Some earlier, some later, but usually around the 7th grade year of school, these kids become someone that is quite difficult to deal with at times. They do grow out of if, or so I am told.:p

I loved 7th graders. They kept me young. Rode a motorcycle to school for 2 years just for fun. Kids thought it was cool. LOL

And, yes, they do eventually grow out of the mindless behavior of 7th & 8th grade. Just remember, you cannot kill them! LOL
