Trouble at Indianapolis: Danica Patrick runs over crew member

The creman is injured but OK, Danica says it's not her fault. I am not sure I agree with her.

I like Danica, and think she's a good driver, but the idea that nothing is ever her fault is getting a little old
The crew member is still in the hospital with a concussion and "facial lacerations."

The pic I saw of the poor guy, he looked bad.

I'd have to see video if there is one to give any sort of opinion. What I did notice is no helmet? No firesuit? The guy looked like he was wearing a hoodie and jeans - this is IRL regs?

Kyle48, that's what I'm wondering about, also. Why was the crewman out on pit road when he wasn't in full gear? I know it's just practice, but damn, common sense should tell you it is still dangerous.

Don't know why he was strolling along so close to white line.

Looks like his fault for being out there.

liveleak and youtube are blocked here @ work...yes I'm stuck working Saturday. HELP!

If anyone else has another link it'd be appreciated, or I'll just have to check it out when I get to the house.

...and I do appreciate the link, Guido. Even though I can't use ::shakes fist at IT department ::

that's both's fault. The guy needed to be in pit road gear, shoulda noticed a car coming at him and got out of the way. Danica shouldn't have been so hot that close to her pit box, and noticed the guy standing there.

I liken this to the pits at a dirt track. If you're out there and get hit, it's your fault. Those cars aren't so nimble that they can leterally run on a dime, and can't stop on a dime.

One thing to remeber is that during practice, they have to practice everything, and take the same lines they would during race day, including their line going into the pit stall.

And another thing. Everyone that's on pit road, why isn't a single one of them wearing safety gear???!!! Damn, there's cars at racing speed on the track, cars coming in and out of the pits and everything else! Just because it's only practice doesn't mean the danger's gone.

Looks to me like IRL is the one to blame here for lack saftey dduring practice.

"He was actually walking down pit lane (running an errand) down by the Andretti Green pits," said Dale Coyne Racing chief mechanic Mitch Davis. "The Green guys said he was walking along, looked back at Marco Andretti, stepped to the right and when he did he stepped right in front of her. He was going back to the garage to get something.

"Danica's team is torn up."

Too many people behind the pit wall so this guy walks along the pit lane.

Bad choice.

I see it as a safety problem that the Indy league needs to address.

I don't see it as Patrick's fault. She was doing what everyone else was doing and expected to do.

But isn't it the crew chief and the spotters responsibility to make sure she gets into the pits safely?

Well, after watching the video now; I don't see how that's her fault. If I'm at the track, and the cars are 'live' I'm not tip-toeing the line anywhere near them.

To add to that, this is also an IRL-wide problem; if the guy was wearing a helmet, this would have still been news, but not nearly so bad.
