Truex to test DEI power?

Jeff Hammond himself went on record to confirm his guess about the #2 Penske Dodge for 2006.

"Anything is possible, but I do know that everybody at DEI expected to get Truex locked in by now. There's been a lot more pressure put on him, especially from the Penske organization. They've offered him a fairly lucrative contract to jump ship and go over there." (FoxSports)

I think we'll finally see DEI tested as a racing team, and not a driver loyalty company. Junior is there because his name is on the door. He's made comments about the team (his own), about other drivers, loyalty, his dad, and more that would lead a person to believe he's there because of the memory and hard work of his dad, not because it's his best financial move. Rememebr DEI resigning him a couple years ago, and Junior openly commenting; "I dont have to race with DEI"? Waltrip is with DEI, because well, he'd be hard pressed to find another ride in Cup with his recent history, and his loyalty to Earnhardt Sr. for giving his first 'big-time' shot. Loyalty aside, neither of DEI's drivers would be piloting those Chevys on Sundays.

Now we see Martin Truex Jr., a solid driver. A kid from New Jersey with some loyalty to Little E. for his Busch shot in his Chance 2 car, but beyond that- no real loyalty to DEI. Junior and Chance 2 gave Truex a door to Cup, and with Junior clearly upset with his team; (comments from sunday; "That first transmission was pretty darn good, I dunno why it wasn't still in there."), doesn't really care for Waltrip, and has made comments in the past about not getting what he's owed as a driver. Not to mention Teresa Earnhardt is an absentee owner leaving the day-to-day to a guy that simply expects to mention DEI and have doors open for him- Truex may not be headed to Penske, but he'd be better served someplace else in my opinion.

I can say that if DEI fails to sign Truex there will be an even bigger rift between DEI ownership and Little E. Truex and Junior are friends, as well as employer-employee. Barring a personal favor to Junior, Truex will probably go elsewhere and signal the demise of a solid NASCAR powerhouse. Dale Earnhardt Inc. must sign Truex to remain competitve in NASCAR's top series, they have no real prospects beyond what Junior is trying to hand them, and they're screwing that up too. Is it possible for Dale Jr. to take ownership from Teresa? If DEI stays this course they're doomed. By all accounts Waltrip had to make The Chase to save his ride- so right now, Michael is gone. Chances are they won't sign the 1 car to Truex, and Dale Junior is obviously, and rightly so- upset weekly with the lackluster team he's been handed. Right now DEI is looking down the barrell of a loaded .45 with the probability of having only one top-notch driver in 2006 (Junior- surely they could fill the other two cars, there would be drivers lining up to fill the seats, but imagine the talent).

IF Truex signs with DEI, it will be the most lucrative contract in recent years for a young driver. And IF DEI does it, it will signal to all the other race teams, drivers, fans, media, and current team members- they're serious about making DEI huge, and will no longer accept running behind Roush and Hendrick.

Truex and his agent are set to test the power of DEI and NASCAR in the coming days and weeks, this is alomost better than a sunday afternoon. :)

He can't take what isn't his. She can give it to him. Either outright ownership or just control. But, I don't think she will do either. DEI was left to her and her alone.

If Truex is smart he will take the Penske offer. Lil'E might be better off some where else where the grind of being the company face isn't all on him. DEI could keep Mikey and bring in others to fill the seats and still be a viable team.

Agreed. But, how many people would walk away from what ever $ DEI is bringing in to give it to someone else. Also, what in Lil'E's character, upbringing, schooling, etc. makes you think that he could do a better job? Running a multi-car team takes a different skill set than driving a car. Look at all of the drivers who have tried to run their own team and failed. Unless someone is brought in Lil'E would probably fail as well. And, if you're going to bring someone in why wouldn't Teresa do that and keep the money?

yeah you're totally right..but whose to say that dale jr. is not capable of running DEI? where others have failed some might succeed you never know, or do you?

There is one driver who hasn't failed, Robby Gordon.

Robby Gordon, please. Do you even follow NASCAR. Robby 1st started in Cup in '91. He drove for several different teams, including DEI. In 2000 he started his own team and finished 43rd in points and thats with a 4th @ Watkins and a 9th @ Infineon. He disbanded the team and drove for 2 other teams before finally driving for Childress. This year, after losing his RCR ride, he starts up another team. And, he's 38th. Yep, I'd certainly hold him up as the paragon of running his own team.

Or, maybe I missed the winkie and you were trying to make a funny. In which case my apologies...

I'll admit I don't know but with the amount of money involved if it could be done then someone would be doing it, successfully. There are just too many demands on any one person to be able to run a multi-car organization when they are also a driver.

Also, the fact that Lil'E couldn't get along with the Eurys, thus prompting this switch and his subsequent problems in the 1st place leads me to say he can't drive and run DEI.

yeah that's true, it is obviously that he cant do both and still be on top, from how he's doing this year.

id put money on that Jr will run DEI one of these days...DEI was setup so that SR would have something to pass on to his kids...Jr and his brother and sisters will run DEI at some point...barring TE doesnt sell it.....id put money on it.

assumptions always suck....unfortantly just because you dont like Jr you assume negative things about him and him alone....if you take the time to actually read some of the articles regarding the jr/eury split you would see this.....Teresa gave Eury Sr a promotion and a chance to have more of a say in goes on in all the cars...not just the 8 car....Tony jr and Dale jr actually get along great....they grew up together...they got in trouble together as kids.....working together was hurting that relationship..on both sides....it wasnt just Dale Jr......Tony Jr has stated lately he feels bad for Jr and is offering any advice that he possibly can to help him on or off the race track and to lift his spirits.

Tony Sr probably would have recieved the promotion regardless of the crew switch.

Untrue. I said he and Eury couldn't get along. I never meant to imply that one was more the reason than the other. Eury Sr. has said that he was getting tired of the travel. He is an obvious asset to DEI, thus the promotion. And justly so. The last several races last year Lil'E and Eury Jr. were hardly speaking. This was very obvious. When Sr. got promoted it was felt it was best to split the Jrs. Eury Jr. wanted to keep his team and cars. So we have Lil'E sucking hind tit trying to catch up with cars he had no experience with. Mikey was used to hand me downs. He was used to trying something a little different. So he gets Lil'Es cars. No biggee. Just make them where he can drive them and he's doing about what he did last year.

As to Lil'E running DEI, I wouldn't put any money on it. Its all Teresa has and I think she holds on to it until someone comes along with the money to buy it or she passes it on to Taylor.

well thats what you said the first time around...hence my comments...and here's what you said the 2nd time around....

Untrue. I said he and Eury couldn't get along

here's Tony Sr's take on the whole thing

Before Dale died they had a plan put in place in case he did die early...the plan was for TE to take over...but he was very anal what happened to that organization and he said it was built for his children...id bet there is something in writting that says if she doesnt sell it...it goes to his kids.

Teresa is the one thats screwing DEI up right now...she needs to get her hands out of it.

Truex said, after his Busch win today, that he signed the contract today to drive for DEI next year.

If you watched tonights Busch race I believe that argument has been put to rest!!! :D

Martin Truex, Jr in the 1 car with Bass Pro Shops..........contract's signed!!! :beerbang: :beerbang:
