Trying to install heated grips on an ATV

Hey guys,
My Buddy has a 650 Bombardier ATV, and he's getting up in years and wanted heated grips put on.
I read the directions, and thought, "pretty simple".
1 wire goes on the negative terminal, and the other wire ties into a power wire.
Well, seeing the battery is in the rear of the machine, and the negative wire had to tie into the battery, I tied the hot wire into the tail light.
3 wires tie into the tail light. one red, one that looks orangish, and a black one. I tied into the black one with the hot wire, figuring the black wire is the hot wire.
I fired up the machine, turned the lights on, and waited for the grips to get warm. and waited, and waited......no heat.
All lights on the machine work, negative wire is firm to the battery, not sure whats up.
Any thoughts?

Black wires are usually ground wires not power.Need to get a test light and see what wires are hot and which are not.

For AC the black wire is usually hot, and the white is negative. On DC, the RED is usually hot, and black is 'negative'. The orangish one is probably the ground wire. NOTE...without a test light, I wouldn't bet on that 100%, hence the word 'usually'.

Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how it turns out tonight.

I've been trying to find a heated steering wheel cover for my dad's Rhino. All I could find was for a golf cart. Any ideas?

The red is probably the ‘hot’ that would light the rear running lamp, the orange maybe a brake light and black the ground.

I’m a better plumber than electrician:)

I would guess with this.

If the ATV used a chassis negative like cars do, just ground the black wire to the frame, and run the red wire to something with switched power.
